Ready-Made Family Widower Gil Montgomery's new nanny has a secret. There's a reason Julie Bishop and Gil's daughter, Abby, connect so perfectly--Julie is Abby's birth mother. Julie gave her daughter up for adoption years ago, but she couldn't resist the chance to be close to the child her heart never forgot. But Julie never imagined she'd fall for the handsome adoptive dad. Gil's been burned before, and Julie worries that if her secret is exposed, he'll never forgive her. The perfect family is so close, but so far... Unless Gil can let the past go and welcome Julie home. Right where she belongs.… (mais)

For this type of book, it was fairly well done. I liked the characters (Gil, Julie, and Abby) and I cared about what happened to them--though the plot was fairly predictable.

Julie and decisions: She makes a bad decision in not telling her parents about her pregnancy (because she feels they're already too burdened with the care of her sister), but she makes a good decision in going to a group that helps young mothers. Her decision to seek out Abby to make sure she's happy is questionable to me--had it just been for the initial one week, I probably wouldn't have thought much of her not telling them that she was Abby's biological mother (of course, if that happened, we wouldn't have a book). But as the time she spent with them grew and her feelings for Abby and her father grew--well, then I started to feel as if she was creating a relationship by starting with a deception (or at the very least a lie of omission). No matter how much she tried to rationalize it, it's still not telling the truth, and I have a hard time believing that a relationship that starts with deception can last.

It was odd that so many people guessed that Julie was Abby's biological mother but Gil and Abby never seemed to suspect (though it's possible that Abby "fantasized" (in the way kids do) about having Julie as her mother rather than as her nanny.)

I thought Gil's reaction to learning that Julie was Abby's biological mother was believable--he felt betrayed, and he had every right to feel that way--though he did jump to conclusions about Julie and Pam teaming up to take Abby from him. I know Christians are called to forgive, but he seemed to get to the forgiveness stage rather quickly--and I suspect much of that has to do with the page limit for the Love Inspired series books.

In the end, we're never told how Julie resolves her commitment to go to Paris. She did give her word to do that (I'm not sure for how long, but at least for a year, though several times she mentioned she hoped to do that job for several years.) I wondered if she was leaving her "employer" in the lurch by changing her plans. Definitely not cool. Given how much was made of the Montgomery family business being in dire straits, I can't see Gil having the money or time to be able to join her overseas if she did keep her commitment. ( )
