"When Billy, a troubled young man, comes to private eye Cormoran Strike's office to ask for his help investigating a crime he thinks he witnessed as a child, Strike is left deeply unsettled. While Billy is obviously mentally distressed, and cannot remember many concrete details, there is something sincere about him and his story. But before Strike can question him further, Billy bolts from his office in a panic. Trying to get to the bottom of Billy's story, Strike and Robin Ellacott--once his assistant, now a partner in the agency--set off on a twisting trail that leads them through the backstreets of London, into a secretive inner sanctum within Parliament, and to a beautiful but sinister manor house deep in the countryside. And during this labyrinthine investigation, Strike's own life is far from straightforward: his newfound fame as a private eye means he can no longer operate behind the scenes as he once did. Plus, his relationship with his former assistant is more fraught than it ever has been--Robin is now invaluable to Strike in the business, but their personal relationship is much, much trickier than that."--Amazon.… (mais)

Removed my rating because it's no longer accurate-- I can't enjoy this book knowing it's written by someone currently spreading transphobic hate. I know that's not very "Death of the Author" of me, but that's just how it is.

Trans liberation now. Read trans authors.

Original review April 2019:
The mystery was pretty great-- engaging enough that I read a chapter to my roommate and we ended up reading it out loud back and forth for hundreds of pages until it was done. I think this had my favorite denouement/resolution of the mystery of the whole series, and the most interesting recurring themes. The tense parts near the climax were genuinely nail-biting. I thought Izzy, Billy, and Barclay were all great characters.

Things less great: JKR's portrayal of activists, the far left, LGBT people, and women in abusive relationships. The length of the book, including overfrequent repetitions of Strike aggravating his leg, the same arguments Robin and Matthew have had again and again for three previous books, endless cigarettes, repeated reminiscences to the hug and accidental kiss, Strike's neverending emotional flakiness, and so on. In general, most everything about the personal lives of our two main characters began to grate me by the end of the book.

My final verdict on this one: I've rated it pretty highly because what I'm here for is the twisty mystery, and JK Rowling is a good mystery writer-- but not so much when it comes to romance and relationships, and I'm also glad we've finished the "politics" book in the series because I don't think I could stand much more of JKR's idea of activist youth culture.

I quite enjoy this soap-opera-disguised-as-a-mystery. I really shouldn't, as I feel this is really Rowling's next slow-burn will-they-or-won't-they? romance after the ones she built up in the Harry Potter series.

I really shouldn't, because I am not a fan of romance plots. However, I am a sucker for really well-delineated characters, whether lovable, likable, dislikable, or loathable. Yeah, I'm aware those last two are likely not real words. Don't care.

The only thing that keeps me from five-starring this book is, unfortunately, down to the formatting of a standard mystery where the entire thing is fun watching all the characters get run through their various plots, but then it's a touch of a slog when there's the gigantic information dump at the end (no matter how well-executed) of at least one character laboriously taking other characters through the entire explanation for the benefit of the reader. Don't get me wrong, Rowling/Galbraith does it well, but it still comes across as clumsy to my writer's heart.

And, without spoiling anything, I do wish Robin could have found her way out of the final mess she found herself in.

Despite that, I enjoyed the hell out of this book, and remain excited for the next instalment. ( )
