"A small town hides big secrets in The Dry. After getting a note demanding his presence, Federal Agent Aaron Falk arrives in his hometown for the first time in decades to attend the funeral of his best friend, Luke. Twenty years ago when Falk was accused of murder, Luke was his alibi. Falk and his father fled under a cloud of suspicion, saved from prosecution only because of Luke's steadfast claim that the boys had been together at the time of the crime. But now more than one person knows they didn't tell the truth back then, and Luke is dead. Amid the worst drought in a century, Falk and the local detective question what really happened to Luke. As Falk reluctantly investigates to see if there's more to Luke's death than there seems to be, long-buried mysteries resurface, as do the lies that have haunted them. And Falk will find that small towns have always hidden big secrets."--… (mais)

Heavy-duty story with a great ending! ( )

Not much to say about this, other than it's an absolutely solid murder mystery. Similar to, but not the same as, John Hart. Think: John Hart takes an Australian vacation.

Seriously, thought. I'll absolutely read the next Jane Harper publication. Really enjoyed this one. ( )

Atmospheric murder mystery set in a small (minded) Australian town during a drought. Federal agent Aaron Falk returns home after a tragic triple murder involving an old friend, but could there be a connection to a dark secret from his own past?

The plot seemed strangely familiar - the death of a school friend told in flashback and a troubled reunion bringing up old memories and animosities - but the claustrophobic setting was scarily convincing! I think I hated every character in this book and suspected half of them of being the killer(s). The 'evidence' implicating Aaron in Ellie's death seemed a bit flimsy - a name on a scrap of paper - and the reaction of the town to his return was over the top but both added to the volatile undercurrent of the story. Falk and town cop Raco make a great detective pairing and the mystery kept me guessing but I think Jane Harper's writing is definitely stronger in The Lost Man, despite the similarities in themes and character relationships.

Now I can watch the recent adaptation. which is how I discovered the book in the first place! ( )

As a debut novel this is extraordinary. As an Australian crime mystery it's quintessential reading. Stunning and captivating. Kept me reading til late at night. ( )

I read the NY Times "Books To Read" list every Friday and that is why I ended up reading this book, I'm very glad I did. It was a book that hooked you from the very start, it truly was hard to put down. I really liked how it solved a lot of the usual problems with thrillers, I found it entirely plausible and believable, there were no out of character moments, the "solution" made sense, and it even made the "physical danger" scene work. I also liked the way Ms. Harper handled flashbacks, they were clear and informative. I will definitely keep an eye out for any more books by her. ( )

Jane Harper creates an atmosphere of simmering tension right from the off. Her version of High Noon in the Outback flickers between past and present to slowly reveal what actually happened between characters who are far more engaging than the cogs usually found in clockwork thrillers.
She observes all the conventions — the local loudmouth causing trouble, an old flame awakening lust, patchy mobile phone reception, a double-whammy denouement — while producing something fresh.

Ms. Harper throws out so many teasing possibilities that it’s hard to believe this is her first novel. And even harder to believe that she learned to write fiction via a literary agency’s online writing course. (She had already been a print journalist for more than a decade.) One trick the course clearly taught her was a basic of the crime genre: Make sure that nothing is what it looks like at first sight. People trying to solve the Hadler murder case — and to deal with many other troubles that erupt in Kiewarra during Falk’s stay — are reliably quick to jump to the wrong conclusions.

Solid storytelling that, despite a plethora of flashbacks, never loses momentum, strong characterisation and a sense of place so vivid that you can almost feel the blistering heat add up to a remarkably assured debut.
