This book is a collection of short stories about the Icononclasts Gateways, i.e. someon's attempt to write anichients and StarGates into the Star Trek world. The Gateways "series" is actually an interesting idea of a collection of themes which lie into other series. Reading the whole series is not necessary, but reading the portion that is the sequal of the first book from "TOS" word makes me want to circle back and read the rest. This book is the "climax" of the others. Each other book in this series is one story that ends with a "to be continued" like context, adn then finishes in this book. However the stories don't intermingle even in this book so you can just pick and choose what you like. I am currently reading the DS9 relaunch, and as such had read "Demons of Air and Darkness" and only had the back story to read DeCandido's DS9 story completely. I felt that his story was too short and fast paste to fit where it did. He should have taken at least one whole book to finish the story. It starts with Kira in the ancient world of Bajor (before it was called bajor, likely equal to about 1200 A.D on Earth) and she included a great line about wanting a new tense of language to refer to items that happened in her personal past but where yet to happen in relation to the time/place which they are currently in. that transition was fast, but likely acceptable, the transition from there back to "modern" times at DS9 was ridiculous. The story failed to explain how it happened, why it happened, or anything else, then it just ended. I do recommend the book and story line as a whole, but of the story which I was most interested in I was disappointed.

Created by the incalculably ancient Iconians, whose transcendent technology is quantum levels beyond that of the Federation and its allies, the Gateways offer instantaneous transport across unimaginable distances. Throughout the known galaxy the sudden reactivation of the Gateways has destabilized interstellar relations between planets and cultures previously separated by countless light-years. Starfleet's finest have coped with the crisis as best they can, but circumstances have forced several valiant commanders to leap through separate Gateways into the unknown. Captain James T Kirk of the original Starship Enterprise Captain Jean-Luc Picard of Star Trek: The Next Generation® Colonel Kira Nerys of Deep Space Nine Captain Kathryn Janeway of the U.S.S. Voyager Captains Calhoun and Shelby of Star Trek®: New Frontier Commander Nick Keller of the U.S.S. Challenger All of these heroes have taken the ultimate gamble: hurling themselves through a Gateway without any knowledge of what lay beyond. Each faces a personally unique challenge, struggling to find a way back to the ships and homes they left behind. And waiting behind at least one of the Gateways are the ageless Iconians, the primordial architects of the mysterious portals causing chaos throughout the Milky Way galaxy. Where did they disappear to, many long eons ago, and what do they want now? The answer lies on the other side... Não foram encontradas descrições de bibliotecas. |

We discover what happens to Kira when she passes through the Gateway to escape a nasty Theta Radiation demise in the Gamma Quadrant while helping with the evacuation of Europa Nova.
Kira and Torrna later become prisoners during the waves of the war, but they manage to escape. Back on the peninsula, Torrna is desperate - his wife Lyrra and his children were all killed during the war. Kira tries to pummels some sense into him and reminds him of his duties. Kira finally travels to the Fire Caves and finds another Iconian Gateway there. When she steps through it, she briefly meets an alien which apparently is truly an Iconian, and he sends her back to DS9.
On the station, Kira memorizes over her experiences and finally realizes what she has to do: To accept that Benjamin Sisko is gone, to accept that the world is changing, and finally for her, to accept her being in charge of DS9.

Picard, having a background of sorts with the Iconians and their Gateways, is the logical leader of the cooperative effort to find a way to shut down the Gateways that have opened all over the galaxy. In [b:Doors Into Chaos (Gateways #3)|217840|Doors Into Chaos (Star Trek Gateways, #3)|Robert Greenberger|http://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/books/1172791475s/217840.jpg|210909] the story is used to illustrate the magnitude of the crisis facing the Galaxy, and to establish that it is indeed the race of the Petraw that we met in the first novel who are behind the awakening of the Iconian Gateways.
Picard's journey through a Gateway is a desperate attempt to locate the ancient Iconians and find a way of shutting down the entire Gateway network. Picard does indeed find the descendants of the Iconians and while they themselves cannot help him, they do provide him with the information to try to accomplish the deed himself. He must locate the Master Resonator, a device that, when located, should shut down the network of Gateways. After being sent on his way Picard finds himself on an alien world, once populated by the Iconians. With the aid of a local inhabitant discovers that instead of just one device there are 14. Thankfully there is also a map of sorts that tells Picard which Gateways the resonators must be inserted into.
After returning to the Enterprise via a Gateway the race is on to get all the resonators into place before time runs out. This requires the cooperation of numerous ships and draws back into the story the Defiant, the Excalibur and the Trident. As well as several other familiar ships and characters. The joint effort is successful and the Petraw are sent on their way with the warning never to try to pull anything on the Federation again.
