A family favorite. You see Santa in action getting ready for the big day, and the art is vibrant, joyful, and full of fun details. Even my high schooler will spend a long time looking at the warm, detailed, and funny illustrations.

Still just as cute as the first time I read it, almost 5 years ago. ( )

This was kind of boring. Santa is the number one toy expert. He is the number one wish expert, etc. the illustrations are nice, but they don’t make up for the lack luster story.

An expert in children, toys and gifts, Santa spends his time testing toys and pairing them with the perfect recipient in this charming Christmas picture-book from author/illustrator Marla Frazee. Whether listening to the children on his lap, quality testing games and toys, or wrapping a mountain of presents, Santa works hard, and almost always get just the right thing...

Having loved Frazee's artwork in such titles as Everywhere Babies and the Caldecott Honor Book All the World, and greatly enjoying Santa stories, I picked up Santa Claus: The World's Number One Toy Expert with great anticipation. I was not disappointed, finding the book completely charming! The descriptive text is fairly minimal, and quite straightforward, describing Santa's various activities and tasks. The artwork, on the other hand, is expansive, and absolutely charming. Humorous, sweet, endearing - these illustrations are tons of fun, and sure to charm young Santa fans everywhere! Recommended to fellow Marla Frazee fans, and to anyone seeking Santa picture-books for Christmas. ( )

In a series of comic behind-the-scenes vignettes.... Working ''long, long hours,'' Santa toils entirely by himself -- a new twist on the usual bustling North Pole scene.

PreS-K. The words are minimal in this exuberant holiday title that explains the extraordinary care and effort Santa puts into his work. It's the images that will truly delight. ... The disparity between the deadpan voice and the energetic, absurd pictures creates perfect comedy.... Frazee creates extraordinarily expressive characters and a strong sense of motion in her winsome scenes. Children eagerly anticipating Christmas will thoroughly enjoy this rowdy holiday celebration and its behind-the-scenes, personalized look at a diligent, devoted Santa, who, working alone... "gives the exact right toy to the exact right kid, 99.9% of the time ... no one is perfect. Not even Santa Claus."

This unusual view of Santa Claus focuses solely on the jolly old fellow himself, because in Frazee’s interpretation, dedicated Santa does all the work, all the time and all alone, from initial toy selection to final package delivery. ... Frazee uses her trademark approach in her colored-pencil and gouache illustrations, showing multiple images of Santa on a page to indicate motion or passage of time and adding typical Frazee humor to the mix. Her Santa has a genuine personality and some real-world workplace issues of overwork and frustration, but also pride in a job well done. An oversized, horizontal format adds to the unique view of this Santa’s workaday world.

K-Gr 2 -- ...Dressed in high-tops, a T-shirt, and a variety of enormous shorts with patterns that suggest the passing months, Santa meticulously evaluates all kinds of toys, tests them out, and finally matches the perfect choice with each particular kid. Frazee, a master at creating scenes and moods with her energetic drawings and spare text, fills these pages with details and vignettes that readers will want to explore repeatedly. A fresh and fun look at the big guy.

As the world’s number one kid, toy, and gift expert, Santa gets to know every child, selects toys, performs quality control, and wraps all the gifts himself. ... The magic here lies in Frazee’s effortlessly clever, detailed illustrations. ...Frazee’s Santa is hard-working, devoted—and hip. He sports red high-tops and voluminous, suspender-hoisted boxers, the patterns on which change according to the time of year..., his mood..., or task.... Frazee delivers the exact right book for the exact right season.
