"NEW YORK TIMES BEST-SELLING AUTHOR. ENTRY #9 IN MERCEDES LACKEY'S CELEBRATED SERRATED EDGE URBAN FANTASY SERIES! Teenager Staci's father has just remarried, and now she finds herself being shunted aside by her new stepmother. Shunted all the way to the run-down and dying Maine town of Silence, in fact, and the custody of her alcoholic mother. It gets worse. Silence seems to be stuck in the proverbial stone age. There's no cell phone service except at the very top of a bluff outside of town, no internet except dialup, and not one familiar franchise or business. Staci's mom seems to have gotten even worse since the last time Staci lived with her. The only bright spots in the whole place are a friendly waitress at the diner, and a bookstore where she meets a gaggle of geeks and gamers. But all is not as it seems in Silence. There are strange things moving beneath the shabby surface, terrible plots in play, and deadly players in the game, and Staci is about to find herself caught up in the middle of it all. This is a breezy and entertaining urban fantasy novel that forms a stand-alone addition to the SERRAted Edge Series written by Mercedes Lackey and a handful of other authors. Staci is stranded in the rather strange town of Silence with her less than functional mother. Elves, "magic" motorcycles and other odd-ball creatures make an appearance. I preferred The Chrome Borne and The Other World omnibus edition stories to this one, but Silence is still a nice addition to the series. The teenage characters in this novel did not whine so much as is usual for Mercedes Lackey novels aimed at teenagers, nor was this novel as dark as some of the others in the series. A short, enjoyable read.

This is part of the SERRAted Edge series but it stands alone and can be an entryway into the books. Staci has gone to live with her alcoholic mother after her father’s recent remarriage. Silence is as difference from NYC as can possibly be. There is no cell phone coverage in town, internet is back to the 80’s speed and so much of the town has a 1950’s feel to it along with only having one employer. Even being by the ocean doesn’t get it any tourist industry. With the start of summer, Staci is having a hard time integrating into the local population since her mom is no help. She does fine she can get some phone coverage on a hill out of town and she guilts her dad into sending cash to smooth out some problems of transportation [ bike] and things she needs to make life a bit easier to live with her disengaged mother. She does connect with some kids at a local bookstore and is introduce to the few local social activities. This gets her the attention of the son of the family that own the only big employer in town and invites to his house parties. Of course not everything is as it seems and with the help of a stranger to town Staci and her friends find out why Silence is the way it has been and try to stop it.
Not my favorite of this series but I am happy to see this series coming back. I have to wonder will we see more of Staci in following books when she gets older and decides to go out in the world.

Pretty good story, though it doesn't at all feel like SERRAted Edge to me. Same universe, definitely, but a different feel. It's much more YA, for one thing (one extremely horrific scene, several less horrific but still a bit gory, one kiss quickly passed over). I could see this turning into an entire series - Staci the Dark Elf Hunter. It does have quite a Buffy feel. I like Staci, and Wanda, and the rest of the gang (though I admit they mostly blurred into one another). Several more comments are mostly spoilers so I won't make them - but Tim is mostly proved right, I'm afraid. And I spent a lot of time in the middle of the book wondering if Dylan was going to turn out to be doing exactly the same thing as Sean - not quite, but not all that different either. Not a bad book; I enjoyed reading it, and I'd like to read more. But I don't like it nearly as well as the Tammin books. ( )

A little slow on the start, but picks up at the end. There is more to the Edge than Fairgrove Industries. Staci and her friends are interesting. They get involved in the Elven war is dangerous and they prove good fighters, but the book leaves me wishing for more explanations to be given to them. ( )
