It's probably closer to a 3.5 but there were enough parts of this that I really enjoyed that I decided to lean on the generous end of the scale. The beginning is slow and I found the ending anticlimactic but around the middle when Alice and Oliver separated, I was completely invested. I'd love a book that was about Alice's next journey and I would really love a book that explored Oliver's first year in Furthermore (predictably I loved the character whose power is being able to talk his way in and out of anything). I think if you're a fan of Catherynne M. Valente's Fairyland series or L. Frank Baum's Oz books, you'll enjoy this. If you're not, you'll probably find it a little too twee and confusing. ( )

Alice Alexis Queensmeadow is 12. And that's a very important age in Ferenwood. Soon she will be called to share her magical gift with everyone in her community. Along with all the others her age, she will be rated on her magical skill and given an important task to complete. She hopes she will be tasked to find her father, who disappeared 3 years before taking only a ruler with him. Imagine her surprise when an older boy, Oliver, asks her for help with his task. She dislikes Oliver because he once made fun of her -- pointed out her different appearance in front of everyone at school. Things never seem to go easily, or as planned, for Alice -- and she finds herself forced to travel through the strange and dangerous land of Furthermore to find her father ..... with Oliver.

I listened to the audiobook version of this middle-grade book narrated by Bronson Pinchot. He has a nice voice and reads at an even pace. I have hearing loss, but was easily able to understand and enjoy this audiobook. At just over 8 hours long, it took me a couple days to finish listening. The humor, colorful fantasy and creativity of this story made it very entertaining!

Alice is a delightful main character. She feels different, separated....like she doesn't belong with her family or with anyone. It was sweet seeing her learn that differences can be strengths, and that what she sees as her biggest flaw might just be her greatest asset. Oliver is both a scoundrel and a caring person. His magical gift is both a blessing and a curse it seems. Both Alice and Oliver learn to work together and discover how to forgive, trust and form a friendship.

All in all, a nice, fantastically creative middle-grade story! It touches on some subjects that all children have to learn to deal with -- failure, loss, betrayal, trust, friendship, embarrassment and learning from mistakes. ( )

4.5/5 stars. Will write more later but I just wanted to say I just loved the relationship between Alice and Oliver. These two were definitely my favorite characters. ( )

This is one of the ARCs I picked up at PLA, and it might be the only one I've managed to read before release day. (Don't worry, I passed 90% of the other ARCs on to our teens and Comic Con attendees, so I'm sure they all got read by someone before their release dates!)

I wasn't completely sold on the style of writing when I began the book, but I stuck it out for a few chapters and slowly began to find it charming rather than distracting. First my favorite things: Alice, the paper foxes, and the beautifully vivid descriptions. The story is just as vibrant as the cover, and Alice is a great main character, feisty, smart, and determined.

I also loved the themes of self acceptance, embracing individuality, and friendship that wove throughout the story.

tl;dr: Lots of fun, and a great choice for middle schoolers or older readers who loved [b: The Phantom Tollbooth|378|The Phantom Tollbooth|Norton Juster|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1438887022s/378.jpg|1782584] or [b: Alice in Wonderland|13023|Alice in Wonderland (Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, #1)|Lewis Carroll|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1391458382s/13023.jpg|2933712]. Fanciful, full of puns and riddles, and lots of colorful magic. ( )

This was a Santathing Book from a few years ago. A children's book, written in a fairytale sensibility, with a great heroine. The author has a way with words, that is both matter of fact, and beautiful. However, I found the book a bit simplistic at times. The end just happened and once Alice got back home, life went back to normal.

I know that I would have loved this book as a kid, but as an adult, its not one I would read again. ( )
