When the Rebellion defeated the Empire in the skies above Endor, Leia Organa believed it was the beginning to a lasting peace. But after decades of vicious infighting and partisan gridlock in the New Republic Senate, that hope seems like a distant memory. Now a respected senator, Leia must grapple with the dangers that threaten to cripple the fledgling democracy -- from both within and without. Underworld kingpins, treacherous politicians, and Imperial loyalists are sowing chaos in the galaxy. Desperate to take action, senators are calling for the election of a First Senator. It is their hope that this influential post will bring strong leadership to a divided galaxy. As the daughter of Darth Vader, Leia faces with distrust the prospect of any one person holding such a powerful position -- even when supporters suggest Leia herself for the job. But a new enemy may make this path Leia's only option. For at the edges of the galaxy, a mysterious threat is growing.… (mais)

aijmiller: Many of the plot elements are similar; there is political tension, and attacks on the Senate, etc. It's older than this book, and fits into the Legends EU universe, so there are a lot of other arcs going on within it, but I think they're really similar and could function are readalikes.… (mais)

I have always loved the Star Wars universe and especially the novels that were written about it. My favorite titles have definitely been the ones written by Timothy Zahn but some of the new ones are nearly as good. This book is great and it really fits into the Star Wars universe, it adds something new without distracting or detracting from the existing mythology. ( )

This one had far too many POV's that didn't switch frequently enough to justify the switching. Some points/timelines also contradicted what we already know to be true so that was a bit off-putting. All in all it was a pleasant audiobook experience, and I enjoyed a new story in a franchise I adore. ( )

I really loved this book. I read Leia, Princess and this one back to back, and they were both such great experiences. I love this book. I love the politics and differences. I love the burgeoning partnership, almost friendship, betrayalship, and growth to almost something again connection between Leia and Ransolm. I have some issue with the whole "Han wasn't allowed to be part of this book," but it was nice getting to hear that from Claudia personally before going into it, so I knew it was her fault or a choice of her writing.

I really love Ransolm and how real and faulted he is at all time, and how equally all the politics is shown on each side. Including live plurk read of the book below:

Yes, I might be taking a detour to read all of Claudia’s SW books next in my SW read palooza. I really did love my first one of hers so much.

ɑรรɑรรiɳcɑptɑiɳ
This one starts with a ceremony, just like ‘Princess’ started and ended with. I wonder if it will end with one. Let me ponder instead of heart-death Bails death being a thing now.

ɑรรɑรรiɳcɑptɑiɳ
BABY BEN WITH PARENTS OMG

ɑรรɑรรiɳcɑptɑiɳ
:-D :-D :-D

ɑรรɑรรiɳcɑptɑiɳ
I will be saying all the things, I'm sure.

ɑรรɑรรiɳcɑptɑiɳ
Leia
You are so much like your dad in your temper.

ɑรรɑรรiɳcɑptɑiɳ
I really do love Claudia’s writing of Leia.

ɑรรɑรรiɳcɑptɑiɳ
My thoughts about this book really do mirror a lot of Claudia's talking about being approached to write this book, and I could see my judgment of this book being epically steeper if I didn't know it was offered to her a post-trilogy Leia book, that couldn't be a Lei & Han book. How that nearly impossible, and yet she makes it work, and yet still it's

ɑรรɑรรiɳcɑptɑiɳ
unbelievable in places. (Like the explosion.)

ɑรรɑรรiɳcɑptɑiɳ
I saw you. Using “a new order” in that sentence.

ɑรรɑรรiɳcɑptɑiɳ
Omg. Mirror Bright lullaby = ship name!

ɑรรɑรรiɳcɑptɑiɳ
Omg. The box from the last book.

ɑรรɑรรiɳcɑptɑiɳ
Yeeeepppp. I predicted something terrible would come from her bluff off her governorship.

ɑรรɑรรiɳcɑptɑiɳ
THE FIRST ORDER IS SAID NOW.

ɑรรɑรรiɳcɑptɑiɳ
I really do love this professional relationship & how it shows differences without making either of them change while learning to work together.

ɑรรɑรรiɳcɑptɑiɳ
I deeply appreciate that the Darth Vader revelation is something like 2 hours (1/5th in text) from end of this book. It’s a twist that can be much handled, and the under plot can still be worked through.

ɑรรɑรรiɳcɑptɑiɳ
GREER REVEAL. MY HEART.
At least that finally makes sense between her racing dedication and her new dedication to Leia not explained how she made the switch from one to the other.

ɑรรɑรรiɳcɑptɑiɳ
Also, this book does suffer a little prolongedly from "this cannot be a Leia & Han" book, because I agree with Claudia. At least two things in this book already are so big he would have come running.

ɑรรɑรรiɳcɑptɑiɳ
ooommmgggg this realization as Ransom is being taken away. and just that itself, too.
MY FEELINGS.

ɑรรɑรรiɳcɑptɑiɳ
I'D RATHER BURN IN A BETTER KIND OF FLAMES.

ɑรรɑรรiɳcɑptɑiɳ
TEARS.

ɑรรɑรรiɳcɑptɑiɳ
GAH. THESE PEOPLE.

ɑรรɑรรiɳcɑptɑiɳ
THESE ARE THE FEELINGS THAT MAKE ME LOVE THIS WORLD, AND THE COMMON NON-CENTER CHARACTERS THAT MAKE AND BREAK MY HEART ALL THE TIME.

ɑรรɑรรiɳcɑptɑiɳ
Guh, and ending on the beginning of the Resistance, too.

ɑรรɑรรiɳcɑptɑiɳ
RANSOLM'S SO GOOD. I LIKE HIM SO MUCH. I LIKE THE COMPARISON AND CONTRAST AND MAKING TERRIBLE MISTAKES AND COMING BACK FROM THEM AND THE PARTNERSHIP AND THE DIFFERING POLITICS. AND I LOVE HIM SO MUCH AND HIS ENDING IS SO PAINFUL.

ɑรรɑรรiɳcɑptɑiɳ
HE DOES! THEY DO.
I love how much it shows, and how much you care, and how each view point could come from a different, but still well meaning place. That they both make mistakes with each other, and grow in working with each other, that he's all passionate idealism and she's still dedicated but a little burnt out and they learn from each other.

ɑรรɑรรiɳcɑptɑiɳ
I love that it's not romance, but but but its 5000% an important relationship and partnership and falloutship that changes them both, again, forever. ( )

Finally: a Star Wars novel which deals with the political challenges that are the backdrop to all the swashbuckling! It also provided much-needed background to the state of the relationship between Han and Leia in The Force Awakens, and the path which led Leia from Alderaanian Princess to Senator to General. It also explains what happened to the New Republic which replaced the Empire, and where the First Order came from.

There have been far too few Leia-centered adventures in the Star Wars canon, and this is an excellent corrective to that trend. I was delighted that this book didn't focus on her as a Force user, as a mother, or as an adventurer, but showcased both her talents for and her conflicts with her life-long training and role as a politician. This is a woman for whom duty has always come first, who prefers peaceful solutions to violence -- but who can't pretend that she doesn't welcome the opportunity to leave behind the bickering, increasingly-impotent New Republic Senate in order to actually do some good in the galaxy.

The supporting characters are important in this story, not only for the roles they play in the plot, but because Luke, Han, Chewbacca, and other familiar characters from the movies are primarily off-screen. We see Leia outside of her familiar matrix of relationships and find out more about her by seeing who she is in relationship with her political allies and enemies, and the young people who form the core of her support staff. I truly enjoyed getting to know Greer (Chief of Staff and pilot), Joph (a young X-wing pilot), Korrie (16 year-old intern), Ransolm (a rival from the Centrist political party who collects Imperial military armor), and Carise (another Centrist whose focus on noble blood provides a foil to Leia's own lack of concern about it, and is a catalyst for several important plot developments).

Finally, I applaud Claudia Gray for picking up on the internet-spread call to replace the reference to her time as a prisoner wearing a bronze bikini from "Slave Leia" to "Huttslayer" -- and it reframes that episode from Return of the Jedi to focus on how significant it was to Leia and to thousands of beings who had been oppressed by the Hutts.

If your primary interest in Star Wars is Jedi, Sith, military adventures, and/or the story arcs of the Skywalker boys, you may not enjoy this book. But for those of us who have always loved Princess Leia, this is a delightfully worthwhile read. ( )

If you like Star Wars and House of Cards, then this is THE book for you! Brilliantly written and with a lot of political space opera intrigue! ( )
