On a foggy summer night, eleven people--ten privileged, one down-on-his-luck painter--depart Martha's Vineyard on a private jet headed for New York. Sixteen minutes later, the unthinkable happens: the plane plunges into the ocean. The only survivors are Scott Burroughs-the painter-and a four-year-old boy, who is now the last remaining member of an immensely wealthy and powerful media mogul's family. With chapters weaving between the aftermath of the crash and the backstories of the passengers and crew members--including a Wall Street titan and his wife, a Texan-born party boy just in from London, a young woman questioning her path in life, and a career pilot--the mystery surrounding the tragedy heightens. As the passengers' intrigues unravel, odd coincidences point to a conspiracy. Was it merely by dumb chance that so many influential people perished? Or was something far more sinister at work? Events soon threaten to spiral out of control in an escalating storm of media outrage and accusations. And while Scott struggles to cope with fame that borders on notoriety, the authorities scramble to salvage the truth from the wreckage. Amid pulse-quickening suspense, the fragile relationship between Scott and the young boy glows at the heart of this stunning novel, raising questions of fate, human nature, and the inextricable ties that bind us together.… (mais)

I liked the way this story was told from the viewpoint of almost all the characters, and I cared about the fate of the main protagonists, the survivors of the crash. The vignettes of the trophy wives, the ageing media personality, and the bored heiress were very interesting as well. There were really no boring secondary characters.
Notwithstanding my rating of 4 stars, I have found a few flaws. In the final chapter one of the characters reveals something about the crash incident, the artist Scott, confronts Bill Cunningham with the resolution of the mystery, whereas there was no foreshadowing of where the knowledge of the facts came from. Also one character has a slightly different date of death than the others in the copy I read. Leading the reader to question whether this had significance. Ironically it is the security guard Baruch, whose body also was not recovered by the final chapter of the book .

In all a very readable book if not for the mystery aspect, then for the portraits of the characters. ( )

Holy shit, Noah Hawley, where have you been all my life?

This is one of those novels that pisses me off mightily, because I have nothing but both love and jealousy for someone that can build such real characters, so monumentally human and fallible, then take those characters and interlace them like the gears and sprockets of a fine watch, so that each one, through their own actions, push or influence those around them, inevitably driving the story forward, even as we live it out of order.

I got this book quite a while ago, and had it sitting on my TBR list long enough that I'd completely forgotten what originally tweaked my interest in it. Hell, I couldn't even tell you what it was about, aside from falling and waves, based on the cover. And, as usual in situations like this, I took no effort to find out. Instead, I just went into the book cold, wide open to anything it could offer.

It offers a lot. Each character is meticulously built right in front of you, and each one is someone you know, or you've heard about in the media.

Ah, then there's the media. Hawley doesn't take a poke at the current state of journalism in America, no he slaps it around and makes it his bitch. And he's spot on. He perfectly executes the media spin, taking two friends to an affair, taking an upcoming arrest and death to conspiracy, taking a crash to a terrorist event.

And, at the heart of it all, he has Scott, the only adult survivour of the crash, who is alternately loved and reviled by different characters.

I can't tell you more than this, but I will say, in a year of some pretty damn good books, this one is top three.

I gotta go find me some more Hawley books. ( )

Serviceable contemporary thriller. Colin Harrison's novels (and many others) are better in this sub-genre. ( )

This is a thriller that is also timely and observant. It shines a needed light on cable news in general and manages to perfectly parody one network and its major evening "talent" in particular who uses insinuation and innuendo to smear anyone who dares disagree with him. Those who agree are "patriots" and "great Americans" of course. I thought the story was well plotted and the characters were nuanced and interesting. I have a slight quibble with the way the ending was handled but that is almost expected in a book like this. ( )

Hard to believe this book won an Edgar Award: mostly mystery, not very thrilling. A private jet heading back to New York from Martha's Vineyard crashes, and a last-minute invitee (a struggling artist) saves the life of a four-year old boy by swimming miles to Eastern Long Island. The book delves into the passengers and crew in an attempt to reconstruct how they got to the plane and what was happening in their busy lives as the media frenzy and FAA/NTSB/FBI try to determine the cause of the crash. Presumably, this was about the two businessmen aboard, each of whom has developed enemies. The saving grace of the book is the painter himself, and the relationship he builds with the young boy. The rest was meh. ( )
