John and Brooke are running from the FBI, hiding out from a past that is hard to believe. But the FBI isn’t the only thing searching for them, and their lives are on the line, and so are many other innocent people. John and Brooke were part of a special team that hunted ancient beings called the Withered. The withered possess people and take their lives, and their souls, not caring who they possess or destroy. John lives with the guilt of those he failed, but none more so than his deceased girlfriend Marci, the only woman he would ever truly love, and Brooke. Brooke was possessed by a Withered named Nobody, who drove her victim ps to suicide. Now Brooke’s body houses thousands of women that killed themselves, and the personalities randomly come out, confused and wanting to led their lives. In their hunt to end all the withered, John Brooke and their dog, Boy Dog, travel from town to town, hoping to eradicate the ancient enemy. I have not read the previous books in the series, but will definitely read them. I recommend reading this is order only because you will discover things that happened in previous books, although I was able to follow without reading the earlier ones. The book is loaded with supernatural twists and keeps you interested from page one. I would definitely recommend this series to anyone who loves Supernatural, the book or movie series, or thrillers. I enjoyed the characters and the way they interacted with each other and those around them. John and Brooke, and Brooke’s personalities, have such a deep connection that no matter who possesses her body, she knows deep down that John will not hurt her. The story is fast paced and is one of those stories that you don’t want to put down. This is definitely a book, and series, that doesn’t get the attention it deserves. I definitely enjoyed the way Dan Wells draw you in. This was truly a fantastic read from start to finish.

I'm really liking this Audible series. The narrator is really good and the story is pretty spellbinding. This one is a little different in that the demon is not really discovered until late in the book. The pace is a might leisurely up until then. But then it sticks the landing. ( )

So much character and plot development! So many emotions!!! John confronts a lot of his feelings in this book and I think he's better for it. I love his character and I want him to be happy so I'll just be over here sobbing over a serial killer that says he isn't a serial killer because he only kills demons and bad people. ( )

I am glad I already own #6.

A sizable chunk of this novel was boring to me, but after four John Carver novels, Dan Wells has earned my trust. And hoo boy did he come through, and not quite the way I imagined.

Side note: snarky John is my favorite. ( )

This one was a little slower in the beginning, but turned out to be every bit as satisfying as the previous books. It also packed an additional emotional punch; I’d expected Marci’s personality to show up eventually, but still, it was heartbreaking when she did. She was freaking brilliant, and I miss her. Poor John. With John’s anchor pretty much gone now, the last book’s title is making a lot of sense… ( )
