I don’t read action packed thrillers very often but I was motivated to read this one because I've heard so many good things about this book over the years. Orphan X is the first book in the series and I had a fun time reading it and look forward to checking out the other books.

As a child, Evan Smoak was recruited for training in the super secret, off the books, orphan program. So what did he learn in this mysterious program? Well, how to be an assassin. He left the program without a trace, and now puts his skills to good use. He is now known as The Nowhere Man. People call him when they need help out of a horrible and dangerous situation. But now Evan is in a bit of a pickle himself and his life might be in danger.

One of the things that impressed about the story is the author did a nice job setting the stage for future books. I have no idea if that was the plan from the get go or if this book was originally intended to be a standalone novel. Whatever the case, you get enough of a backstory on Evan and the Orphan program to keep you interested but I also am betting on the fact that I've just barely touched the surface. I guess what I'm trying to say is you get hooked in as a reader but are also curious and eager for more.

The plot is heavy on action but is balanced with some more "normal" life type scenes with other characters. At about 400 pages it manages to be a quick read with a good pace.

If you are like me and don't venture into this genre very often, consider giving this one a chance.

Thanks so much to Macmillan for sending me a copy! All thoughts expressed are my honest opinion. ( )

Holy Smoak, I love this character. An outstanding action thriller book with good suspense. Despite being an action hero, Evan Smoak does have insecurities interacting with people close to him, so glad he has some flaws. From online articles this series should become a TV series, can't wait! ( )

Orphan X is a pretty decent thriller. It's nothing super original, but if you like Lee Child's Jack Reacher character, you'll like Gregg Hurwitz' Evan Smoak. Using the special op/assassin-like skills that were beat into him, Smoak helps those who truly need it.

But the past comes back to haunt him so he finds himself struggling to help those he's promised to help along with keeping himself alive.

The book was good enough to encourage me to keep reading the series. ( )
