As our closest stellar companion and composed of two Sun-like stars and a third small dwarf star, Alpha Centauri is an ideal testing ground of astrophysical models and has played a central role in the history and development of modern astronomy--from the first guesses at stellar distances to understanding how our own star, the Sun, might have evolved. It is also the host of the nearest known exoplanet, an ultra-hot, Earth-like planet recently discovered. Just 4.4 light years away Alpha Centauri is also the most obvious target for humanity's first directed interstellar space probe. Such a mission could reveal the small-scale structure of a new planetary system and also represent the first step in what must surely be humanity's greatest future adventure--exploration of the Milky Way Galaxy itself. For all of its closeness, α Centauri continues to tantalize astronomers with many unresolved mysteries, such as how did it form, how many planets does it contain and where are they, and how might we view its extensive panorama directly? In this book we move from the study of individual stars to the study of our Solar System and our nearby galactic neighborhood. On the way we will review the rapidly developing fields of exoplanet formation and detection.… (mais)
I enjoyed reading this book. It was well-thought of and characters were perfectly described. This work definitely deserves more audience. “It glows above our mighty sea-laved isle, Changing and flick’ring in the arch of God, Where miles and miles of grassy levels smile, And where the unsung pioneers have trod. Alpha Centauri! See the double star That gleams as one above the smoke-drift cloud, Above the groves of Redwood and Bethar, Or where the checked Pacific thunders loud. Star of my home! When I was a child, Watching, and fearful of the coming years, You bade me learn the story of the wild, You bade me sing it low to stranger ears!”
– From the poem “Alpha Centauri” by Mabel Forrest, (1909)

The book is dedicated with appreciation to musician Ian Anderson and to all of the assembled minstrels and vagabonds that have contributed to the making of Jethro Tull. Their numerous musical adventures have accompanied, enthralled, and challenged me through many years of listening, and for this, I am grateful.

It was a clear and windless winter's evening in early July when this author first saw α Centauri.

The very far distant future is perhaps bleak from our human perspective, but it will be a very long time in coming, and between now and then it is at least reassuring to know that there are many deep adventures and many great journeys of discovery ahead of us.
