Abstract
States across the country are aligning their Academic Standards to the Common Core Standards.
It is with these standards that each school district within those states are having to align and re-
write their curriculum. There are currently only two academic areas that the Common Core
system has standards for, Math and English Language Arts. English Language Arts standards
are to be implemented into all classrooms regardless of area of study.
With little instructional time to spare, I began to integrate reading and writing
assignments into the classroom curriculum. These reading and writing assignments were aligned
with the instructional goals within the unit that was being taught. The goals were aligned with
the National Standards for music, and that the hope was that the goals would be reinforced
through the integration of the reading and writing assignments. The purpose of this study was to
find which application best fit the needs to integrate reading and writing within the classroom.
The applications that were tested were reading and writing using traditional paper and
pencil, as well as reading and writing using iPads within the classroom. The writing
assignments, which were designed to test the assimilation of knowledge by the students were
graded according to the Common Core English Language Arts Standards for Content and
Grammar.
The findings were that the group of participants who performed the best in the study
exclusively used iPads within the study and classroom environment to complete the writing
assignments. The attitudes of the students on the final survey showed that 67% of the students
preferred to complete the writing assignments with electronics. In addition, 42% of the students
preferred the use of paper copies for their reading assignments and 37% of the students preferred
the use of electronic copies.
