I gave this book 5 Stars even though it has a very slow start. I felt the author was "stringing the reader along" unnecessarily - when he wouldn't reveal what transpired "in the forest" right away. However, when the TRUE plot unfolded, it was worth the wait...I was hooked! Mark Edwards has a masterful technique which enables the reader to visualize exactly what he is communicating through his characters. He is a superb writer, with an articulate style, a perceptive eye, and an exceptional gift for articulating human fallibility. Simply put: I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The characters, the scenery, the plot and the multiple surprise endings were riveting and surprising. The book is basically about a couple's train ride through the Romanian countryside and the perils they encounter during and after their journey. If you enjoy mystery and thrilling tales of the dark side of humanity, you will certainly enjoy this book. Excellent job Mark Edwards! ( )

Follow You Home is an eerie psychological thriller by Mark Edwards that was published in 2015. I selected it for the What's in a Name Reading Challenge and, boy, am I glad that I did. It was fantastic. The story begins with Brits Daniel Sullivan and Laura Mackenzie traveling to Romania at the end of a two month trip through Europe. Planning to marry and have children, they decide that they should have one last holiday together before family issues come in the way. They have already visited Spain, France, Italy, Greece, Hungary and Belgium and want to see Eastern Europe as a contrast to the traditional European sites. Daniel is an app developer and Laura works in marketing for a children's charity. After boarding a train to Romania, the couple meets Ion and Alina. Alina is a comic writer and Ion, well, he is a professional bully. When Ion convinces them to take a nap in a sleeping car that is unused, they wake up to find that their passports, credit cards, and phones are missing from their bags. Soon they are confronted by a train conductor who is checking tickets. After explaining that they were robbed, the conductor throws Daniel, Laura and Alina off the train. The terror begins but when the return to London, Daniel and Laura are emotionally unable to even mention what happened after they were let off that train in Breva, Romania. Laura begins to see ghosts and is the first to realize that something evil followed them home.

This is an atmospheric thriller. We don't know what actually happened in Breva until the midway point of the story when Daniel finally tells his psychologist what happened. I expected the couple to have seen something pretty horrific in order to substantiate their diagnoses of PTSD and Daniel's excessive drinking. Laura began seeing ghosts, something that she also dealt with in childhood. While it was bad, I expected more. The eerie atmosphere begins when they get home and Laura starts seeing Alina, who was killed in Breva, and other men whose faces they both remember seeing in Breva. Daniel believes that every person he tells about the horror he experienced is being murdered and he feels that all these events are connected. His psychologist is killed in a fire and his best friend kills himself one night when he was should actually be happy about getting a record contract. Connected? Maybe. I don't want to be a spoiler.

I thought this was a fantastic story. It kept my interest from the first pages all the way to the end. I am rating it only 4 out of 5 stars because I wanted the Breva horror show to be more dramatic. ( )

This book left me sooooo conflicted. The premise is intriguing and it starts out strong. I was fully absorbed and the tension was palpable. Then the big secret is revealed.....in the middle of the book! Yes we all want to know what has happened, but I felt it was extremely premature. Then they move on to a new problem and it almost becomes a whole new book in a way. Then bam! twist, bam! another twist, bam! yet one more twist. It became ridiculous. It was trying way too hard to keep you on your toes. The ending was such a let down. So I guess I gave it 3 stars because it could have been great? See, internal conflict. ( )

Okay, well, definitely cross Romania off my list of places to visit...ever! Follow You Home is a creepy story of everything terrible that could happen to you while touring Europe. (I was sorry to read in the afterwords that something similar happened to the author in real life.) It was a twisting, adrenalin-laced, complex horror story that seemed never to end, then somehow, Mark Edwards managed to bring it to a conclusion with a real shocker. I couldn't put this one down. Good job! ( )

What happens in Romania...

To paraphrase Tolkien, “It’s a dangerous business going out your door, because there is no knowing where you might end up.” Some people thought that Tolkien was speaking of adventure, and some say that it was fear. In truth you can’t have one without the other, but for now, I am talking about fear, the fear of the unknown, and what might be lurking for you far from home, where no one knows your face or speaks your language. It’s an old and primal fear used to very good effect in Follow You Home by Mark Edwards.

Daniel and Laurel are a young professional couple who plan on settling in London, getting married and starting a family after they finish their backpack and hostel tour of Europe. Traveling by train through Romania, they meet a young native couple, Ion and Alina. Ion talks the couple into napping in a sleeper car for which they have no tickets. They are caught by guards, and discover that someone has stolen their passports, tickets and money. Along with Alina, who attempts to help them, are thrown out at a stop in the middle of nowhere. After being threatened by dogs the trio decide to walk along the tracks until they find a station where they can get help. Alina disappears, and the couple come upon a cottage in the woods so sinister that it might have come from a Grimm fairytale. Then something horrible happens.

I am not just avoiding spoilers here. The novel flashes forward three months, and our couple are back in London, and they are falling apart. They have split up, with Daniel drifting into alcoholism and Laura into depression and hallucinations. Whatever happened was so terrible that it is ruining their lives, and the rest of the novel delves into David and Laura’s lives; both what is happening now, and what happened back in Romania. Mr. Edwards does an excellent job of highlighting and contrasting the past and the present, and wrings a great deal of tension the couple's situation. The sense of fear and evil that he achieves left me wondering until nearly the end of the novel if the incident and it’s source are supernatural in origin. If you want to know you are going to have to read because I am not spoiling it for you.

John and Laura are well-rounded, believable characters. Edwards does a good job of showing them unravel before our eyes. Some of the other characters are solid if unspectacular, with the exception of Alina, whom seems to vibrate with life on the page. There are plenty of twists and turns in the plot, and it never seems to contrived or forced. The prose is smooth and capable, and Mr. Edwards does an exceptional job in showing the characters question and struggle with their grip of reality.

Where Mr. Edwards really shines is in his portrayal of evil. A lot of writers try but he really brings the dark side to life with an almost tangible effect. Without being too disgusting or bloody Mr. Edwards made the hair on the back of my neck stand up more than once. The title of this book is very appropriate, because this novel followed me even after I finished it up.
