Inspired by Stephen Alcorn's magnificent animal portraits, popular poet and noted anthologist Lee Bennett Hopkins commissioned thirteen poets to craft verses to match the eloquence of this art. The resulting celebration of art and nature captures the subtle intensity and striking textures of a renowned artist's relief-block prints in a unique homage to the power, mystery, and beauty of the natural world. Lee Bennett Hopkins and Stephen Alcorn's first poetry anthology, My America: A Poetry Atlas of the United States, was honored as one of the best books of 2000 by School Library Journal, the American Booksellers Association, and the New York Public Library. Gathering many different poets this book explores the mysterious animal world through poetry and detailed illustrations that resemble woodcuts. The text flows and bounces according to whichever animal it is representing. All the poems seek to capture the essence of an animal. ( )

I enjoyed this collection of poems especially the poem titled, "Camel". These poems and illustrations go well together and the block prints of each animals poem would make great tee-shirts. Besides the art, the Lee Bennet Hopkins does a great job describing each animal and gives them the characters they so deserve. I especially enjoyed the first peom as well, Ruby. My daughters name is Ruby and her favorite animal is the dog and she found it awesome that this dog was so strong but sweet. ( )

This is a great book for looking at design. The poems will hop off the page and slither around. The words are all over the pages and the art work is great. The collection of poetry is good because they are not all by the same person meaning if you didn't like the last poem you might like the next.

Wonderful illustrations of animals. The poems are written by different people. My favorite was the porcupine poem. The porcupine poem words were laid out on the page just like the quills of a porcupine.l I also enjoyed the camel poem.

The illustrations are dark and deep. This book is not your typical children's poetry book about the fluffy animals and cuties. This book allows for the readers intrepetation of the illustrations and allows for personality. ( )
