"Twenty-five years since THE SANDMAN first changed the landscape of modern comics, Neil Gaiman's legendary series is back in a deluxe hardcover edition! THE SANDMAN: OVERTURE heralds New York Times best-selling writer Neil Gaiman's return to the art form that made him famous, ably abetted by artistic luminary JH Williams III (BATWOMAN, PROMETHEA), whose lush, widescreen images provide an epic scope to The Sandman's origin story. From the birth of a galaxy to the moment that Morpheus is captured, THE SANDMAN: OVERTURE will feature cameo appearances by fan-favorite characters such as The Corinthian, Merv Pumpkinhead and, of course, the Dream King's siblings: Death, Desire, Despair, Delirium, Destruction and Destiny"--… (mais)

I was expelled from the universe, by stars caught up with rhetoric and infection. I'm currently inside a Black Hole. - Dream

It's very rare to come across perfection. I believe it even more rare when it's a graphic novel with multiple creators. I'd say I've seen it only a couple of times. Claremont, Byrne, Austin, and Orzechowski on Star-Lord's second appearance. The same team on their brilliant X-Men run...and that's possibly it.

Until now. Neil Gaiman (words), J.H. Williams (images), Dave Stewart (colours), and Todd Klein (letters) have created the most gorgeous looking book I think I may have ever had the pleasure to read. And I make a point of noting the colourist and letterer, because they are often forgotten, but in this case, this book would not have been as good as it is without their input. And Gaiman's story? Brilliant.

As other will likely indicate, this is actually best considered "Sandman 0" as it is the lead in to issue #1.

I'm not going to get into it. I'll just say read it. Read it slowly and revel in the magic of the words and sights. Fall in love with this as much as I did. It's beautiful.

It's perfection. ( )

This volume serves as both a coda and a prequel to the existing Sandman material and is best enjoyed if one has read the original series.

I usually approach prequels with some trepidation, but this story fits seemlessly with the main story. It succeeds as fan service and it deepens the reader's understanding of Dream and his world. It's a phenomenal juggling act by Gaiman.

The art by J. H. Williams is fluid and his ability to shift styles serves the material well. He has a tendency, on every project he works on, to have overly ornate or confusing page layouts, but it's not too detrimental here.

It goes without saying that this is all my opinion, right?

And I have to give a special shoutout to former Dark Horse co-drone, Dave Stewart, who has become my favorite comic book colorist currently working.

If you've read the main Sandman story, yiu should read this. If you haven't, what the hey? ( )

The Sandman series was never meant for the simple comics reader, only interested in linear plotlines and stunning escapades (though it has both in spades depending on your viewpoint), and the series overture is no exception. We enter the story expecting to discover the precursory events to Morpheus' capture (and escape) whech are outlined in Preludes and Nocturnes, but we get another story entirely. Sure, the events are touched on, but the central story itself is much more esoteric and shouldn't really be viewed as a simple cause-and-effect. We see Morpheus set out on a journey, we see him fail and win, and we see his rediscover aspects of the universe that he may well have chosen to forget. Possibly more importantly for the Sandman universe, we are finally introduced to the parents of the Endless - Time and Night. For those of us who read Catherine Webb's duopoly Timekeepers and Waywalkers there's some interesting similarities (some of which she mat have picked up from Neil's original Sandman, which he seems to now be reflecting back at her), but the duo seem to be a good fit as relatively omnipotent (and uninterested in reality) god-like beings. The story itself was a little bit strange (even for me), but J.H. William's artwork was so stunning that I can't wait to dive back in again and see what the Dreaming produces a second time around. After re-reading the originals again of course! ( )

I had really high expectations for this book considering that the original Sandman series completely changed my life as a comics devouring teen. Overture is exactly what I wanted from a visit back to the world of Dream - a huge intergalactic, metaphysical, allegorical, apocalyptic story, jaw dropping artwork, multiple ah-ha moments that fill in the tiny narrative gaps in the original series, cats and Dream being...well...Dream. This is a book that requires multiple readings and I already can't wait to read it again. ( )

For Karen Berger. You made it happen.
And for the SANDMAN periodical editorial team, who scribbled down my corrections and caught up with me in strange places between 1988 and 2015: Art Young, Tom Peyer, Alisa Kwitney, Lisa Aufenanger, Shelly Bond, Jenny Lee, and Shelly Bond again.
You were the dream team, and you did your work in the shadows. I'm grateful. - Neil
I dedicate the work in this book to my ever-enchanting wife, Wendy Williams. Many have little understanding that such a thing as SANDMAN: OVERTURE could not possibly exist as you see it here without her.
She is the stuff of dreams. - J.H.
