Who doesn't go for a novel where people are getting murdered in rapid succession for no apparent reason? Inquiring minds want to know. Unfortunately, that's kind of the book's peak. On the plus side, Sidney Sheldon provides a relatively smooth sled ride on the way down. His writing is very easy to get through, and there's bits of action through. The book just kind of becomes redundant. How many times and how many different ways can two women just barely cheat death? How many times can an angry man say he will "get those bitches"? How many times can he insist that this time he means it? The plot starts to slide away from innovative heroines and more toward absurd luck. It's a fun read for what it is; nothing more. True escape reading. There is a plot, however implausible, and there are people in danger. It moves quickly to a satisfying resolution. No moral complexities, ambiguous situations. The characters are all sketched lightly, and rely on stereotypes. The two main characters who emerge from the wreckage are Kelly Harris and Diane Stevens. Kelly is an African-American model. Diane is a young married woman who recently testified against a mobster. Both are married to men who work for the same company. Unusual "accidents" make both widows. Diane catches information accidentally that leads her to believe something is amiss and that their lives are in danger. The two don't particularly get along but for various reasons team up to escape from their pursuers, who use rather heavy-handed methods. Seems they could have been a wee bit more subtle. But where would the fun be in that? Overall, because the plot generally hangs together and the story moves along well enough, I gave it five stars. Personally, I find it hard to believe that this writer has garnered so many awards. It's mediocre work with forgettable characters. sem resenhas | adicionar uma resenha

All around the globe, people are being reported dead or missing. In Berlin, a woman vanishes from the city streets. In Paris, a man plunges from the Eiffel Tower. In Denver, a small plane crashes into the mountains. In Manhattan, a body washes ashore from the East River. At first these seem to be random incidents, but the police soon discover that all four of the victims are connected to Kingsley International Group (KIG), the largest think tank in the world. Kelly Harris and Diane Stevens -- young widows of two of the victims -- encounter each other in New York, where Tanner Kingsley, the head of KIG, assures them that he is using every resource to solve the mysterious deaths of their husbands. But he may be too late. Someone is intent on murdering both women, and they suffer a harrowing series of close escapes. Who is trying to kill them and why? Forced together for protection, and suspicious of each other and everyone around them, the two widows embark on a terrifying game of cat-and-mouse against the unknown forces out to destroy them. Taut with suspense and vivid characterization, full of shocking twists, and with an unnervingly realistic premise, the long-awaited Are You Afraid of the Dark? is Sidney Sheldon at the top of his game. Four people die in four different cities around the world in very gruesome ways. All of them are associates via an environmental company they dally at. Two of the four surviving windows want answers, and while they don't trust each other, start Scooby Doo snooping to get closure on their loved one's deaths, which Sheldon has wrapped around the environmental brew haha.
Yeah, it isn't really good traditional Sheldon form, but a must if you're a Sheldon head. ( )
