Jane Whitefield, legendary half-Indian shadow guide who spirits hunted people away from certain death, has never had a client like Dr. Richard Dahlman. A famous plastic surgeon who has dedicated his life to healing, the good doctor hasn't a clue why stalkers are out for his blood. But he knows Jane Whitefield's name-and that she is his only hope. Once again, Jane performs her magic, leading Dahlman in a nightmare flight across America, only a heartbeat ahead of pursuers whose leader is a dead ringer for Jane: a raven-haired beauty who has stolen her name, reputation, and techniques-not to save lives, but to destroy them.… (mais)

If you have never read any of the Jane Whitfield series, get one right now and read it. I can't put my finger on what makes these stories so compelling but they sure are. The Face Changers revolves around a group copying Jane's work and selling it for profit. For those who haven't read any of them, Jane takes people who need to hide and hides them. That doesn't sound interesting. So, you'll have to trust me. ( )

BOTTOM-LINE:
Solid novel
.
PLOT OR PREMISE:
Jane Whitefield is back, and she is trying to live up to her promise to her husband not to help any more fugitives to disappear. But then her husband brings her a Richard-Kimble-like friend who has been framed for the murder of his research assistant, but he can't even blame a one-armed man. Her husband asks her to help because the friend is his old mentor.
.
WHAT I LIKED:
The story expands outward pretty fast, as Jane discovers that other people have been using her identity and reputation to "help" people for profit, in some cases where the people didn't need any help but were scared into thinking they did. Basically to create the demand for the service they can provide. So Jane has to figure that part out too, or she'll never be able to save anyone else again, let alone her husband's friend. Added to the mix is an FBI agent who wants to know what is going on, and knows Jane has the answers -- and he's willing to arrest her to find out. Aiding a fugitive is just the first charge of many he has in mind. Plus, just for fun, her husband is being hit on by one of the bad guys.
.
WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE:
It's a little hard to follow at times as she criss-crosses the U.S. again, and some of the sub-stories are a little over-developed.
.
DISCLOSURE:
I received no compensation, not even a free copy, in exchange for this review. I am not personal friends with the author, nor do I follow him on social media. ( )

Thomas Perry writes another great book: "The Face-Changers". This fast-paced suspenseful thriller kept me reading through the night and wishing it would be longer. The only distraction, though interesting sometimes, is the Seneca and other tribal histories. Sometimes they just don't fit into the part of the story being told. Other times: perfect. ( )

If anyone dreamed he was a Falseface, it was only necessary to signify his dream to the proper person, and give a feast, to be at once initiated; and so any one dreaming that he had ceased to be a False face, had but to make known his dream and give a similar entertainment to effect his exodus. In no other way could a membership be acquired or surrendered. Upon all occasions on which the members appeared in character they wore False-faces ... the masks being diversified in color, style and configuration, but all agreeing in their equally hideous appearance. The members were all males save one, who was a female and the Mistress of the Band. She was called Ga-go-sa Ho-nun-nas-tase-ta, or keeper of the Falsefaces; and not only had charge of the regalia of the band, but was the only organ of communication with the members, for their names continued unknown.

The prime motive in the establishment of this organization was to propitiate those demons called Falsefaces, and among other good results to arrest pestilence and disease.
