The answer is not without. It is within.
The soundless explosions outside me.
Little lives snuffed out in a room 93 billion years wide.
I can spare them only a glance.
The rest of me focuses on the tiny data stream flowing between Alexander and Hypatia.
A strand of spider silk. Fragile as spun sugar. Bearing the weight of the entire fleet.

Three quarters of the way through this book, my jaw was hanging open. My eyes were HUGE. I could not believe it was so freaking awesome. (I cannot say why; it must not be spoiled.) And then this book did an abrupt about face and marched proudly away from that awesome with flags waving and marching bands playing. I mean, OK book, you do you, but really: If the authors had been just a little bit braver, I would have been shouting this book's name from the rooftops, stopping people in the streets and annoying everyone I know to say "Hey, you must read this." It was not to be. And when a book turns and marches away from greatness that way, I tend to fall in like, not love. (Just ask House of Leaves.)

Know that when I say 'like,' though, that is a very high degree of like. My disappointment did not ruin the book for me, which says a lot as to how much fun this thing is. If my four stars actually meant 'really liked it,' I'd have happily given four. This was lots and lots of fun. How much fun will no doubt vary depending on your personal obsessions, but let me say that, in spite of my general love for epistolary fiction, I went in with a very skeptical attitude (because YA is usually code for teen romance, these days, and I knew this book was going to have that in supersize helpings) and I found a lot to delight me.

So, how can you judge if this book is for you? Maybe you like:

If you like any combination of these things, you should give this a go. The teen drama will not distract you from the fun you will be having when you meet AIDAN. And me? Note to readers: don't pick this up and say you're only going to read a few chapters because before you know, it's been 2 hours and over 300 pages and you really should have gone to sleep by now but you had to know how it ended and woah. ( )

What a fantastic book!

I shall be completely honest with you chum. When I first picked this book up I did not think it was for me! The format was unlike anything I’ve ever read. “How will my simple mind blend the documents together in order to understand the plot?” I thought. How naïve I was! There was no need for my brain to manually process the documents... Kaufman and Kristoff did it for me!

I remember being blown away by the authors’ ability to create a sense of urgency in a format such as this. It’s revolutionary!

I picked this book up because I adored The Nevernight Chronicle, which was also written by Jay Kristoff. I did not expect it to make me think (and question) the way it did - On a personal note, my grandad has a sculpture of ‘The Thinker,’ upon which he has inscribed ‘Cogito, ergo sum.’ ‘I think, therefore I am.’ He has parroted this Descartes quote at us for many years. I had never pondered the implications of it quite so much as I did upon reading this book!

Highly recommend. On to Gemina I go ....

No One Hears You Scream In Space....

Some of you may be too young to know that reference, but holy moly is it appropriate for this book! I recommend everyone go grab this book as soon as possible. It is Ender's Game, Aliens, War World Z, 2001 Space Odyssey, all together, rolled up into one fantastic, heart-stropping, scary as hell, novel.

When I first begun this book I was really afraid that my interest wan't going to be held because the formatting seemed a bit cheesy to me. It's presented like a case file for an investigation with supporting documentation, photos, emails, and correspondences. If you think about it, it's a brilliant way to present this story, but if you had less talented writers who focused more on the gimmick you would end up with a sub-par novel. However, you have Amie Kaufman and Jay Krisoff at the helm, and so we end up with a thought provoking, well crafted, and immensely intriguing story that is presented in a creative way.

The story starts off with the destruction of a planet. Then we have a ever so slow, but always present chance across space. All the while, you have mechanical breakdowns, glitchey computers, virus outbreaks, and the people in charge trying to manage this all during war-time scenarios occurring. Civilians are being conscripted for service, and people are starting to get scared. This brings us to our main characters, Kady is really good with computers, and Ezra landed a position as a flight pilot. Through their on going texts and emails the story is told.

All these components could go really wrong, but in this book created by these amazing writers, it all works. It works so much better than I could've imagined possible. I was scared, I was concerned, and the story continued...

This is the first book in what is set to be a series of three books, and I will be waiting for each new book. If someone approached me saying they never really read or enjoyed science fiction, this is the book I would direct them to for a chance to change their heart. I highly recommend this book.
