Ok, so here's what I think happened: the author had a great idea for an interesting time travel book, but realized that the world-building necessary to explain the mechanics of time travel would add too much front-end to that interesting time travel book. So he split out that boring-but-necessary info dump from the good story and made a separate book out of it. Fleshing out that boring pre-story book into a full novel length gave us this book's predecessor, [b:In Times Like These|18653188|In Times Like These (In Times Like These, #1)|Nathan Van Coops|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1455640169s/18653188.jpg|26465949]. Now, that book was, as I stated, just "OK"; a serviceable, rather pedestrian time travel book. But it wasn't exciting, and it wasn't anything that we hadn't seen before.
That brings us to THIS book, which I believe was the author's intended story all along. Amazing Race through time! THIS book is so much more interesting and engaging than the first one that if my theory is not correct, then at the very least, the author had a MAJOR level-up in storytelling ability. Even the audiobook narrator seems to have upped his game a bit (although I eventually had to look at the ebook to determine if he was saying "Dr. Quickly" or "Dr. Quiggly" - it sounded like the quotes in the chapter bumpers were always Dr. Quiggly, but the story character was Dr. Quickly).
All in all, a very enjoyable book and I'm looking forward to the next one.

Time travel race.. which seems kinda crazy when you first think about it since people could know who wins before it even starts, but somehow it works. The game works kind of like The Amazing Race, if you had to get an object in the middle of ancient warzones.

Main distraction was trying to find out which teams in the race represented other time traveling duos. I think the kid and dog are obviously Mr Peabody and Sherman. There was another group who had names similar to Bill and Ted. I might have to read other reviews to see if I missed any others.

Note: Even though this is Book 2 in the series, it can be read as a stand alone.

Ben has decided to continue on with his time travel explorations. He’s been traipsing around with Mim Quickly, Dr. Quickly’s daughter. But before he knows it, he’s tricked into entering a competitive race, the Chronothon! Each competitor is matched up with a guide and they all vault through time, hunting out their specific hidden items at each stop, each hoping to be the winner. Alas, there’s a lot more going on with the Chronothon than just a simple time travel race.

I had a lot of fun with this story. I love this take on the Amazing Race. Ben has learned some great skills in the few months he’s been time traveling and this race will need all his tricks and wits. Even before he can get started, his assigned guide is murdered and he’s suspected of it! But the race must go on, so he gets a new guide (Viznir, who packs practical stuff like snacks).

There’s one weak spot in this entertaining story. It’s the ladies. Fresca from book one has a tiny cameo. Mim is a ridiculous woman who spends much of the story in a jealous sulk; the rest of the time she’s relegated to love interest & doesn’t get to do much else. There’s some new ladies introduced, out of whom Kera is the more interesting. I hope she gets a bigger part in the next book. I like her attitude and weapons. Mim grew up time traveling and yet the author hasn’t used her character for much. Such a shame. That’s a missed opportunity.

We have tons of new characters in this book. The other competitors include the kid Jonah and his dog Barley (yay!), the Ivans (two copies of the same guy), a tattooed green skin alien named Bozzle, and several others. There’s also several new bad guys like Ariella (who lured Ben into all this madness) and the time purists who don’t get names until near the end. Ben’s life is threatened more than once during the adventure. The scariest moment was when he tangled with the circus freak! Eeek! Yes, a real paid circus freak who lives and travels with a circus.

I loved the time traveling dog and his kid. Such an excellent addition to the story. This tale would have a been a bit less great without those two characters. Jonah’s special ‘organism gun’ brought a lot of humor to the story. Awesome! Can I have one of those guns? 😉 I hope we get to see more of them in the future.

The action builds and builds with more and more things breaking in the race and pretty soon we have a few more dead bodies. Towards the end, you know Ben has to make one last big play. I really wanted to scream at him, ‘It’s a trap!’ and yet no one on Ben’s team says anything. Was it just me? Probably not. I think that was well foreshadowed. Even with those expectations in mind, the ending surprised me with it’s twists and turns. I was on the edge of my seat for the final 2 or 3 hours of this audiobook. The ending left me satisfied and ready for the next time traveling adventure. 4/5 stars.

The Narration: Neil Hellegers does a great job with this book. He’s the perfect Ben Time Traveler. I also liked his little kid voice and his female character voices. Each character was unique. I especially liked his voice for Ben when Ben is doing friendly babytalk to the dog. I could absolutely picture those scenes. Great narration! 5/5 stars.

I received this audiobook as part of my participation in a blog tour with Audiobookworm Promotions. The tour is being sponsored by Nathan Van Coops. The gifting of this audiobook did not affect my opinion of it. ( )

My original The Chronothon audiobook review and many others can be found at Audiobook Reviewer.

Everyone loves a scavenger hunt and Ben Travers is no different. Although he’d much rather get to know the daughter of another scientist time traveler. New to time travel, Ben is naïve in many ways and winds up committing to compete in a Chronothon. A time traveler and his guide must embark on a series of time traveling to gather objects defined by the committee. Sounds easy? It would be if that was all it was but Ben finds out it is more about surviving and crossing the finish line and a lot less than having fun. His survival depends on his ability to learn quickly and read those around him accurately.

This book has the time travelers jumping to the French and English War, saving people on the ill-fated Hindenberg, traveling to a dangerous zombie filled planet and so much more! Action packed and full of adventure this book has it all. Although it becomes clear that this race is more than just a race, there are hidden agendas and twists galore, you will have no problem keeping up with the action.

The narrator, Neil Hellegers, does an excellent job of keeping the excitement going in his ability to capture and hold the attention of the listener. His delivery is smooth and on target. I thought I would become confused but Nathan Van Coops keeps it easy to follow and enjoy.

The real question is not who wins, but who will survive? The remaining teams manage to put aside their competitive natures and work together for the common good – keeping time travel and travelers safe.

Coops does a great job of painting the picture of each encounter Ben has and teasing the listener with creative encounters with past and notable historical events. At times, I could close my eyes and feel I was there.

While this is technically book 2 of a series, it can stand alone. This book was exciting, filled with adventures and so twists that left the listener saying, “Oh wow!” I loved this book!

There were no production issues.

Audiobook was provided for review by the narrator. ( )
