A Shivering Of Worlds. Deep in the Chalk, something is stirring. The owls and the foxes can sense it, and Tiffany Aching feels it in her boots. An old enemy is gathering strength. This is a time of endings and beginnings, old friends and new, a blurring of edges and a shifting of power. Now Tiffany stands between the light and the dark, the good and the bad. I really liked the Tiffany Aching series of YA books, and this is a very fine final book for both the series, and Terry's work as a whole. ( )

FOR I CAN SEE THE BALANCE AND YOU HAVE LEFT THE WORLD MUCH BETTER THAN YOU FOUND IT, AND IF YOU ASK ME, said Death, NOBODY COULD DO ANY BETTER THAN THAT...

And so it ends.

[b:The Shepherd's Crown|22886868|The Shepherd's Crown (Discworld, #41; Tiffany Aching, #5)|Terry Pratchett|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1433600285s/22886868.jpg|42456608] is the last published Discworld novel and the last one I have to read. It wasn't quite finished when Pratchett died, although due to the style in which Pratchett wrote, the overall feel is there, along with some parts that are rather solid... and some that are less so.

It starts out hitting hard--with the death of one of the core Discworld characters we've come to know and love--and builds from there. It turns out to be a solid last book, with guest appearances by name of the Witches, along with a handful from the other lines.

One of the odd subplots is Geoffrey, a young boy who wants to become a witch. I wasn't particularly interested in the plot line. Subverting gender roles is something Pratchett has already done a handful of times (in

Overall, even weak as some parts are, I'd rather have it than not. It's a fitting end to a wonderful series.

(and now I have to find something else to listen to...) ( )

The last book by Sir Terry Pratchett: #41 and the fifth in the Tiffany Aching series. She is a wonderful character: caring, diligent, determined, insightful, innovative. In past books, Tiffany has managed to win victories as an underdog, along with the love and support of her family and the Wee Free Men, Feegles, led by the kelda and Rob Anybody. An long anticipated event finally occurs, thrusting Tiffany into a leadership role for all witches, and after some reasonable doubts about being the right witch for the job, she grows into her elevated position. She takes on a young man Geoffrey as a house boy/apprentice, and his ornery, protective goat. Tiffany has to watch over two steadings at a time when the elves decide it's time to invade again. I would have given five stars, but agree that there are parts of the novel, which are disjointed because someone else had to assemble the unfinished manuscript. 4.5 stars. ( )

Sad that this is the last Discworld novel. Really sad because it wasn't that great. ( )

I understand a lot of people rating this highly out of respect for the author, and we can all mourn his passing. But as noted, the book was not finished by Pratchett, another author wasn't brought into finish it up, and the lack of polish leaves a very unsatisfying book compared to others in the series. Plenty of heart wrenching stuff, but lacks the subtle humor and tight storytelling of much of his work; I would rather end the Tiffany Aching series with the previous entry, which was still quite strong. But in The Shepherd's Crown, I've come to realize what it is about these books that makes them so special and endeared them so well to Pratchett's own heart: it's their compassion.

But Shepherd's Crown is still recognizably Pratchett, from the giggle-fit-inducing footnotes to the stern moral message about selflessness, empathy and caring for others. And there's just as much of a moral stance in the way the book addresses the death of a longtime pillar of the Discworld: People around the Disc sense that something pivotal has happened. They stop to acknowledge the gravity of the moment. They pay their respects. And then they return to their lives.

Pratchett, with his sardonic inventiveness, social satire, play on language, deep feeling for landscape and love of what is best in human nature, had less critical praise than he deserved. His heroes and heroines are not royalty in disguise, but thieves, con-men, shepherds, soldiers and midwives. In his championing of the ordinary, the sensible and the slightly silly he went against the grain – and never more so than in creating Tiffany Aching.

Above all, though, “The Shepherd’s Crown” — like all of Pratchett’s fiction — stresses the importance of helping others. Beyond this, I think that Pratchett’s farewell advice would be to follow his witches’ sensible principle: “Just do the work you find in front of you and enjoy yourself.”

Nothing in Pratchett stays still and his inventive energy, book after book after book, is astounding. Yet, as I say, the increasing complexity of the characters is accompanied by an increasing likableness as well as interest.
