"From the New York Times and internationally bestselling author of The Secret Keeper and The Distant Hours, an intricately plotted, spellbinding new novel of heartstopping suspense and uncovered secrets. Living on her family's idyllic lakeside estate in Cornwall, England, Alice Edevane is a bright, inquisitive, innocent, and precociously talented sixteen-year-old who loves to write stories. But the mysteries she pens are no match for the one her family is about to endure. One midsummer's eve, after a beautiful party drawing hundreds of guests to the estate has ended, the Edevanes discover that their youngest child, eleven-month-old Theo, has vanished without a trace. What follows is a tragedy that tears the family apart in ways they never imagined. Decades later, Alice is living in London, having enjoyed a long successful career as an author. Theo's case has never been solved, though Alice still harbors a suspicion as to the culprit. Miles away, Sadie Sparrow, a young detective in the London police force, is staying at her grandfather's house in Cornwall. While out walking one day, she stumbles upon the old estate now crumbling and covered with vines, clearly abandoned long ago. Her curiosity is sparked, setting off a series of events that will bring her and Alice together and reveal shocking truths about a past long gone yet more present than ever. A lush, atmospheric tale of intertwined destinies, this latest novel from a masterful storyteller is an enthralling, thoroughly satisfying read"-- "A suspenseful new novel from beloved and internationally bestselling author Kate Morton, author of The Secret Keeper, The Distant Hours, The Forgotten Garden and The House at Riverton"--… (mais)

What an amazing journey! I was delighted with the way she wove all the stories and characters together. Quite the page turner! I found it very hard to put down. My husband and I listened together and we both really liked this book. Caroline Lee is a remarkable narrator. Well done in so many ways. ( )

I don't think this is the best example of Morton's work. It fell a bit short, honestly, when I compare it to the likes of [b: The Forgotten Garden|3407877|The Forgotten Garden|Kate Morton|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1455283767s/3407877.jpg|3448086] and [b: The Secret Keeper|13508607|The Secret Keeper|Kate Morton|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1455089196s/13508607.jpg|19060869]. The mystery left something to be wanted. It felt watered out and thin.

In a technical perspective, this book was quite interesting. I felt like as I read I could see the technical aspects and the hints that were dropped along the way that made sure the big reveal at the end was not random or unfair to the reader. I think it helped that one of the characters was an actual mystery writer. But it was enough to make me feel like she was trying to do something different., though in the end I was let down when I learnt she was not.

This story felt different from her other works because it wasn't so much a family affair as an on-leave detective who has too much time on her hands trying to solve a closed case. I always loved the family aspect of Morton's books and how people go on long quests to try and find out little secrets of their past, but this was lacking a bit on that aspect as those still alive believed they knew what happened and the investigator was a stubborn outsider.

In the end, I found that while I did not guess the solution as I did for The Forgotten Garden, I was not in the least bit surprised. I felt she reused some plot-twists and motives from her other books and the big reveal at the end was not very shocking. I wasn't dumbfounded or amazed, I just sat like thinking that it made absolute sense if you compare it to her other works and was wondering why I had not seen it coming. It made this book feel very recycled. It might be because she writes very similar novels in plot and style and there's only so many ways one can do something, but I would have liked a bit more originality to it. ( )

A clever story, nicely written. I found some patches were confusing and had to flick back to see whether I'd missed explanations, or whether we were only being fed clues in stages (the latter).

A nice, tidy ending and I didn't actually see it coming.

Kate Morton remains one of my favourite authors. It's difficult for me to classify her books - not romances, not thrillers - but I like that she takes her time over each release and it's clear that she researches her facts carefully. ( )

This was a slow burn with a disappointing ending but the writing style is so skilful that I was entranced once I passed the first chapter. Had I not had such glowing reports of the novel, I would have abandoned it after the first chapter but the richly drawn characters, the strong sense of place evoked by each description, and the intriguing mysteries drew me in. The ending is a little too dependent on coincidence but it is no deus ex machina. ( )
