Intrepid 11-year-old sleuth Flavia de Luce is at her best when called on to investigate the death of the housemaster at a boy’s school, seemingly due to murder. The case is made to order for the precocious chemist.

I read all the Flavia de Luce novels shortly after their publication, but I had missed this short story until now. What a pleasure it was to revisit this favorite series. ( )

I'm a bit puzzled regarding the publishing of this one. If it was in a book of short stories it wouldn't be bad at all. As a stand alone short story it seems pointless. ( )

Fun to read if you like Flavia de Luce, but the problem I see about this very short story is that the crime isn't that bloody interesting and the ending a letdown. But Flavia is Flavia, sometimes I forget that she is only 11-years old. But she is so smart and her thoughts in this short story, how she solved the case etc. is the things that make it readable. She is just so...precocious! ( )

Three stars because Flavia is enjoyable, but the solution to the mystery didn't make any sense! I reread the passage in question a couple of times, but must be missing something... ( )

Flavia de Luce, amateur sleuth, receives a mysterious summons while in the midst of scientific research, but immediately drops everything and hops on her bicycle to begin an investigation. Upon arrival, she learns the housemaster of a local boys' school is lying dead in a bathtub, and a young scholar is seriously freaking out.

I didn't realize this novella existed until last week, so I snagged the ebook while I was between books, knowing it would be a quick read. I still prefer a full-length novel to a novella, but it was all right. I always learn something new about chemistry! ( )
