I finished this book, but I'm not sure how. That's why I gave it 3 stars; at least it kept me coming back for more. I spent a lot of this book mad at various characters, and I especially got angry that the author left us hanging for so long before revealing the truth of what really happened. The book was disturbing on several levels, and I was glad when it ended. ( )

I got off to a bit of a slow start with this book. It had an interesting premise, and I was anticipating a good payoff, so I pushed through. All in all I was not too disappointed.

What if someone delivered a book to you, and it was about you and your life? The deepest, darkest secret you've kept hidden from the people you love on paper for all to read? That's the question the author poses in this book. It's a fresh idea.

The book bounces around quite a bit, between characters and the past/present. It wasn't too disconcerting, but was occasionally a bumpy transition. I didn't like any of the characters - I'm not sure I was supposed to. But I did like the story. At times it was as much a study in marriage and relationships as it was a thriller, which added depth and became almost a subplot - how your spouse's reactions can alter and affect the course of your life. It was a tad predictable, and I would have preferred a more shocking ending, but all in all I enjoyed it. 4 stars. ( )

It's been a while since I read a book where I didn't like the story the characters or what was happening or how it was happening.

The thing with this book though, is that as uncomfortable as it is to read you really don't want to stop.

What I liked about it was you couldn't second-guess it, you might have thought you knew what was happening but at the same time you really didn't you know. It wasn't that easy to work out where it was going. I guess what I'm trying to say is that it was opaque. Or maybe my feelings of dislike for all the characters blinded me.

The ending, when it came, was both satisfying and dissatisfying at the same time. I think on one level it blindsided me and on another level it didn't quite gel with the way the book had unfolded I found some elements of it quite unbelievable.

So, in the end what did I make of this murky little tale and what was it really all about? I am not sure.

Would I recommend anybody else read it? Yes I guess I would.

How would I describe this book? I don't really know, even writing this I feel vaguely uncomfortable and dissatisfied but uncomfortable more than anything else.

Yes it is a very uncomfortable book. ( )

Jesus, this book....... It starts out strong, fascinating, and gritty. The characters and subject suck you in, and keep you from putting this book down once. What transpires, soon after, is like a cudgel to the brain, swift and painful. And then, there's that fucking twist........ Rather like having your legs kicked out from underneath you, and then kicked in the balls. Twice.

Good, strong read. Likable characters(-ish), and believable plot. I'm actually glad I was too numb from the husband's pain/anger, to identify more closely with the wife, or I would have been left a crushed and soaking mess of feelings, and flashbacks. Since this is my first from this author, I might just have to read another novel of hers, soon.
This book was well worth the wait for it, from the library. 4 stars. ( )

This was such a brilliant book and I raced through it a lot quicker than I expected, mainly due to the fact that it was almost impossible to put down. I only managed to convince myself to put it down as it was a week night and I had work the next day. I had seen quite a few reviews comparing Disclaimer to Gone Girl and I have to say that I didn't really enjoy Gone Girl so, for me, Disclaimer was so much better.

It was such a chilling storyline - Catherine reads a book where she recognises herself within its pages when it goes on to describe something that happened to her 20 years ago. Where did the book come from? Who wrote it? What do they know about the events of 20 years ago? All of these questions will be answered along with many more questions that you find yourself asking along the way. My mind was going haywire as I tried to guess what could have happened and I have to say that I was a teeny bit right but at the same time so completely wrong.

As Catherine’s husband and son receive their own copies of the book and some damning photographs to go with it, they are so hurt and upset as they jump to conclusions and don’t allow Catherine to explain. Catherine’s family implodes and the creepy author lurks around every corner, pulling strings like a puppet master instigating a tragic turn of events. Then just when I thought all of the secrets had been revealed, we are left with a negative of a photo that wasn’t developed. That gave me goosebumps!

A chilling, disturbing and twisty thriller that had me hooked from start to finish. I really enjoyed it and would definitely recommend it to psychological thriller fans.

I received this book from the publisher, Black Swan, in exchange for an honest review. ( )

But let’s see what she tries next time. This is only a debut. It packs a huge amount of promise, ingenuity and sleight-of-hand into a rookie effort. And it’s mostly gimmick-free. Until that finale, there’s not a cheap trick in sight.
