All the young men at the Siegel Cooper department store admire Georgiana Yoke, the charming new clerk just arrived in Chicago ahead of the 1893 World's Fair. They wager it won't take long for some lucky fellow to lure her away from her job, and they're right. After a brief and heady courtship, she marries a charismatic, wealthy entrepreneur. A happy ending, but for one catch. Georgiana's affectionate new husband, Dr. Henry H. Holmes, is also a swindler, a kidnapper, and will one day be known as America's first serial killer. H. H. Holmes wasn’t just America’s first serial killer, he was also a master con artist. He duped insurance companies, business partners, building contractors, and women - especially women with property. One was the young Georgiana Yolk who became Holmes third wife (while he was still married to the first two) and eventually the star witness at his trial. This short book takes a speculative look at her time with him, the outlandish stories he told and the cross country trips he took her on, all to cover his tracks and hide his victims. It’s very readable, thoroughly believable, and not lurid or graphic in any way - perfect for anyone (like me) who found the Holmes story in The Devil in the White City a bit lean.

Disclosure: I received a digital copy of this book through Goodreads Giveaways. ( )

Most everyone has heard of the Worlds Fair being held in Chicago in the late 1800's. A lot of peple are aware of H.H. Holmes, the madman murderer who built a hotel TO lure young women and torture them during their stay in the city. FEW if any have heard of his wife Georiana. This book is written thru HER eyes....another victim perhaps? or did she turn a blind eye? WAS she so totally naive or was she a part of his whole sick world?

I know what i believe after having read A Competent Witness. Read this book and you decide for yourself. Was she a victim of the female role in marriage of the times? Was she a product of her sheltered upbringing? Or is it possible that she saw, she knew, but refused to acknowlege the truth.

Hmm....this is a book you'll whip right through not only due to interest but also due to Nickels talent in storytelling. ( )
