Die inleidingen maken het boek meteen een beknopte geschiedenis van de relatie tussen de oorspronkelijke bewoners en de nieuwkomers. Zoals bekend geen fraai verhaal. Een boek vol oorlog, ziekte en dood, culturele ontworteling en gebroken beloften, waar alleen naar het einde toe af en toe wat hoop doorschemert.

Vreemd genoeg vond ik 'Suddenly a gate' een van de meest aangrijpende. Op een dag is het afgelopen met je tradities en gewoontes. En daar komt niet noodzakelijk oorlog of geweld aan te pas. ( )
