Charles is 78 years old and there is much he cannot remember. He cannot remember the names of his children, why he lives in a nursing home, or even whether he ate breakfast today. His forgetting causes confusion, and in his fear and uncertainty he sometimes lashes out at those who try to care for him. But when someone reads a favorite Psalm he quickly joins in, reciting each cherished word. When he hears an old hymn of faith, his hand slowly raises and he breathes out each word quietly, his face reflecting a peace that passes all understanding. Alzheimer's disease has been described as the "defining disease" of the baby boomer generation. Millions of Americans will spend much of their retirement years either caring for a loved one with Alzheimer's disease or experiencing its effects on their lives firsthand. When a person is diagnosed with Alzheimer's, they face great uncertainty, knowing that they can expect to live their remaining years with increasing confusion and progressively greater reliance upon other people to care for them. As the disease advances it seems to overwhelm a person, narrowing their focus and leading them to forget critical truths about the Lord, their life with him, and his promises. Through the personal stories of those affected and the loved ones who care for them, Dr. Benjamin Mast highlights the power of the gospel for those suffering from Alzheimer's disease. Filled with helpful, up-to-date information, Dr. Mast answers common questions about the disease and its effect on personal identity and faith as he explores the biblical importance of remembering and God's commitment to not forget his people. In addition, he gives practical suggestions for how the church can come alongside families and those struggling, offering help and hope to victims of this debilitating disease. If you are a Christian who knows or loves someone with Alzheimer's disease, have recently been diagnosed with early Alzheimer's disease, or are a pastor or ministry leader seeking to better understand and minister to people with Alzheimer's disease this book will encourage you with the good news of God's faithfulness and the future hope he calls us to.… (mais)
Wisdom when facing sorrow and loss of memory of the people and experiences we hold dear is offered. The treasures in this book are most likely to be found when it is read thoughtfully. No quick fixes. No easily implemented to-do lists. There are, no doubt, more up-to-date resources for educating oneself on the latest findings from research on Alzheimer's disease, however this is as good as any and better then most in dealing with the human and spiritual side of experiencing dementia or caring for someone who is. As a middle-aged man with a mother with Alzheimer's, I found this book to be extremely practical as I attempt to be her caregiver. As a pastor, I found a great resource for preaching and teaching God's care for us even when we can't remember Him. I highly recommend this book! ( )

[Postcript] O Lord, I live here as a fish in a vessel of water, only enough to keep me alive, but in heaven I shall swim in the ocean. Here I have a little air in me to keep me breathing, but there I shall have sweet and fresh gales; Here I have a beam of sun to lighten my darkness a warm ray to keep me from freezing; yonder I shall live in light and warmth forever. My natural desires are corrupt and misguided, and it is thy mercy to destroy them; My spiritual longings are of thy planting, and thou wilt water and increase them; Quicken my hunger and thirst after the realm above. Here I can have the world, there I shall have thee in Christ; Here is a life of longing and prayer, there is assurance without suspicion, asking without refusal; Here are gross comforts, more burden than benefit, there is joy without sorrow, comfort without suffering, love without inconstancy, rest without weariness. Give me to know that heaven is all love, where the eye affects the heart, and the continual viewing of thy beauty keeps the soul in continual transports of delight. Give me to know that heaven is all peace, where error, pride, rebellion, passion, raise no head. Give me to know that heaven is all joy, the end of believing, fasting, praying, mourning, humbling, watching, fearing, repining; And lead me to it soon.

Lewis has been retired for just a year and a half.
[Afterword] Alzheimer's is one of the most feared diseases, and because it seems to attack the very core of our being, it can lead us to question how we think and live.

The first forgetting is experienced by the person with Alzheimer's, but the second forgetting reflects a spiritual forgetting experienced not only by the person with Alzheimer's, but more broadly by their family, friends and even the church who seeks to care for them.

[Foreword] I cannot overstate how wise, kind and hope filled this book is. I know I will buy and give out copies in droves. Than you, Ben, for stewarding God's gospel--and good science--so very well.
[Preface] In this book you'll read the stories of those I've met who continue to cling to the power and hope of the gospel despite tremendous challenges and sufferings. Their stories demonstrate the reality of holding on to Christ when everything else seems to be slipping away.
