This book discusses how polar bears swim and hunt, how they keep warm and dry, and the many other ways they adapt to their environment. This book, like a few of the others, gave me more information than I thought possible. I knew a few pieces of information but this went beyond that to discuss their scientific name, Ursus Maritimus meaning sea bear. Polar Bear Characteristics that I found extremely interesting are that the paws of an adult male may be 12 inches wide and as long as 18 inches, or that they don't have eyelashes because they would just collect ice. This book shows things like a crosscut of a polar bears skin that includes, guard hair, under fur, skin, blubber and then muscle. The layer of blubber can be up to 3 inches thick, which helps insulate their body. The book shows the hunting habits, the life of a pregnant female, raising of baby cubs, and it also shows the other animals in a polar bears habitat, even touching on the fact that people are their main enemy, giving a short history on Eskimos. The book ends by discussing global warming and how a scientist keeps track of that and the bears in the wild. This is the life of the polar bear, what it eats where it lives, how big it is, body parts, layers of skin and fur, how it hunts. It also talks about what they do in hte spring and summer month. Then how in the fall, pregnant mom dig dens and hibernate then give birth to their cubs. That they are born with their eyes closed, and how much the cubs weigh at birth. It covers the first two years of the cubs life. That people are the main danger to polar bears, and we can see them at the zoo.
