"There's never been anyone like music legend Johnny Cash. His deep voice is instantly recognizable, and his heartfelt songs resonate with listeners of all ages and backgrounds. G. Neri captures Johnny's story in beautiful free verse, portraying an ordinary boy with an extraordinary talent who grew up in extreme poverty, faced incredible challenges, and ultimately found his calling by always being true to the gift of his voice. A. G. Ford's luscious paintings of the dramatic southern landscape of Johnny Cash's childhood illuminate this portrait of a legend, taking us from his humble beginnings to his enormous success on the world stage."--… (mais)

Read into the life of country music legend Johnny Cash. Starting with his early childhood and going into his life journey of country stardom. Playing for many well known people and creating an amazing image of himself that can be shown through the illustrations of the book. ( )

This book is about Johnny Cash and his life story. It explains his obstacles and challenges he had to overcome on his road to fame. This would be a good book to use in the classroom when teaching about free verse stories and biographies. ( )

This is a great story filled with Johnny's life wrote in free verse. It talks about his entire life, from poverty to his ultimate success. The book is also filled with beautiful pictures as well. I believe that this book would be great to use in a music class with grades 2 and up. This would be a great way to show students his inspiring journey from the ground up. ( )

Summary: this picture book tells the early journey of the famous musician, Johnny Cash. Although he grew up in poverty, his extraordinary talent and perseverance helped him accomplish his dreams of being a singer.

Classroom use: this text is labeled as appropriate for 4th grade and up, however, I think it could still be used in a 2nd or 3rd grade classroom as a read aloud. This is another text I could add to our biographies unit that would go along great with supporting our music teacher when she teaches students that they could be singers one day. ( )

In free-verse poetry and images that recall the emotional directness of WPA murals and photography, Neri (Ghetto Cowboy) and Ford (Under the Same Sun) follow Cash from the grinding poverty and tragedy of his early years to the invention of his signature “boom-chicka-boom sound” and his breakthrough hit, “I Walk the Line.”
