Cute story, although the I was irritated at times by the narrator for some reason. That is totally my problem and has nothing to do with the story.

But I was a bit miffed because at times I didn't know what was going on and although the story was written that way for a reason, to me it felt unnecessary at times and served no purpose. ( )

This is an odd mix for me.
I had a rough start with it, but after a few chapters the story continues with a totally different tone. The main character shows an entirely different side of himself. After that he basically stole the show. So much so, that while the book has an interesting plot, it got overshadowed by Dex. And that wouldn't have been much of a problem for me, because I like jokesters like Dex, except I had a few technical problems with the worldbuilding. Or maybe I just had a hard time understanding and accepting the concept.

As a shifter book, this might be my first with not wolves in it. The author had an interesting idea how to deal with the ripped clothes problem. It was all so clean. Not sure I liked the whole thing with the aftercare and whatnot. It's definitely a different take on it. But... it's like military... so... meh still not a fan.

Weirdly the spark between Dex and Sloane was there during their banter and get-to-know phase, but when they went all in with each other I didn't feel the passion at all. That was weird.

Overall the story was original but predictable and cliché in some parts.
A lousy 3 stars ( )

I want to read this. Sounds fun. And everyone's raving about it.

And every time I see this title in my feed, I read it:
Hell & High Water (TARDIS, #1)

I need a life.

2.5 stars

While reading this book, I was feeling equally amused and pissed off.

Amused because I'm a superhero geek (= every time I hear the word "Marvel" and "movie" in the same sentence I revert to a 9-year-old (boy)) and this pushed all my buttons. It has bad-ass shifters, it has banter. It has mystery and crime-solving. It has hot smex scenes (that's the 26-year-old me taking). So okay, it has some unfortunate interior descriptions, but who cares, right? Heroes!

By all accounts it should have been my favourite book of the year.

But the amusement didn't last long. The banter was juvenile and Dex reminded me of a more juvenile version or Tony Stark (if that's even possible). The "superheroes" were anything but competent, given their intensive training. The "mystery" should have been solved in the first quarter of the book.

No traces of a Therian but the throat clawed out, and the marks looking like the Therian was standing on hind legs. And in a world where Therians are barely tolerated, Dex (with all his 10 years of detective experience) doesn't even think in passing that it might be a Human posing as Therian? I find that insulting.
And then you have Pearce, who was suspicious as hell, has a metal workshop, and had motive that was strong enough his alibi should have been questioned, but wasn't. GRrrrrrr!

The things I was able to ignore in the beginning (like the fact that Dex's personality did a one-eighty three chapters in) slowly started grating on my nerves.

And in the end, for me this book was a whole lot of awesome ideas, most of them already done in comics, executed poorly.

Great start to the series! I really enjoyed the details and character (Therian) building in this. Very clever and intriguing. I had the bad guy pegged early on (along with how the murders occurred), but it was still done well and interesting enough that it wasn't a deterrent. Dex cracks me up. He is a total PITA, but funny as hell. Very much looking forward to Sloane and Dex working together in the next few books. ( )
