The problem that Gellner deals with so effectively in this book is the workings of a government by hereditary saints in a tribal environment that is characteristically on the edge of anarchy. In examining this problem, Gellner provides a thought-provoking study of the relationship between power and belief, between religion and politics. In so doing, he also provides the reader with a rich case history of the tribal social structure of the Berbers of Central Morocco, who are still strongly tribal in social organization. The problem of social organization that is so intriguingly examined in this book is that of the traditional turbulence of this part of North Africa coupled with the social organization of controls that a "saintly" religious structure provides. The essential means by which stability is achieved is through the way in which the saints provide for conflict resolution and stability through a system of tribally routinized charisma. In so doing, it is a study of how tribal requirements " ... push an inherently 'protestant' religion-scriptural, literal, egalitarian and theoretically lacking in clergy-towards the other pole of the spectrum of religious life." In so doing, stability is achieved and a fusion of power realized. ... The basic contribution of the book, besides a description of Berber social structure, is its excellent discussion of the theory of social cohesion through segmentation or balanced opposites. -- From http://www.jstor.org (Dec. 1, 2016).… (mais)
