"Viann and Isabelle have always been close despite their differences. Younger, bolder sister Isabelle lives in Paris while Viann lives a quiet and content life in the French countryside with her husband Antoine and their daughter. When World War II strikes and Antoine is sent off to fight, Viann and Isabelle's father sends Isabelle to help her older sister cope. As the war progresses, it's not only the sisters' relationship that is tested, but also their strength and their individual senses of right and wrong. With life as they know it changing in unbelievably horrific ways, Viann and Isabelle will find themselves facing frightening situations and responding in ways they never thought possible as bravery and resistance take different forms in each of their actions. Vivid and exquiste in its illumination of a time and place that was filled with great monstrosities, but also great humanity and strength, Kristin Hannah's novel will provoke thought and discussion that will have readers talking long after they turn the last page"--… (mais)

The book is about a family during the war(WWII) and also about the present 1995. The author builds the characters thru the first 12 chapters and then your total involved. The twist and turns of the plot just seem to keep moving... some good most bad... Kristin Hannah give a amazing account of the war and how it would play out if you were there. Unbelievable. Really traumatizing.

To start we go from before the war, to the drafting of the men in France and then to full hard core war... and all of it's issues. no power, no food or very little, no electricity and more horrible things. But every couple chapters she brings us back to the present and talks about what is happening now... and how the main character has cancer and at 85 she really doesn't care that much anymore....

Her son Julian plays a terrific role in her life now and wants to care for her every need., but he doesn't really know the story of so many years ago... and when the time comes .. wow it's gut punch.. you won't believe the climax.

I wish the book was longer and we could hear what she had to say on the return flight back to USA...
A book worth reading and sharing with others.

Chapter One: A frail, ailing widow hobbles up to her cobwebbed attic to open up an old box filled with her treasured mementos. Her son finds her there, looking at an old ID card from Vichy France. Then FLASHBACK!!! We go back sixty years.

Seriously? This is a 4.5-star book? Which begins with nothing less than a narrative gimmick? A la The Notebook?

The dialogue serves one function -- to advance the plot. The details (handsomely written, but also with decorative language that is so out-of-place in its decorations) paint pictures of settings we've seen countless times before, e.g. the peaceful, rolling, village greens of pre-WWII Europe that are just Alive With the Sound of Trope. The characters could almost literally have been bursting into song on any page and I wouldn't have been surprised. I closed the book when the character goes to visit Rachel, the black-haired best friend living in a house next door (black-haired Rachel == Jew.)

It's actually distressing how stale this seemed. We've come to the point where the Holocaust survivor generation are in their 80s and 90s, etc. Book-readers have gotten lazy, reading feel-good, easy fables to replace the real stories. I don't know how or why, but it sucks. ( )

If I have learned anything in this long life of mine, it is this: In love we find out who we want to be; in war we find out who we are.

I know that grief, like regret, settles into our DNA and remains forever a part of us.
The stairs unfold from the ceiling like a gentleman extending his hand.
"I think, as this war goes on, we will all have to look more deeply. These questions are not about them, but about us."
"We are all fragile, Isabelle. It's the thing we learn in war."
If I had told him the truth long ago, or had danced and drunk and sung more, maybe he would have seen me instead of a dependable, ordinary mother. He loves a version of me that is incomplete. I always thought it was what I wanted: to be loved and admired. Now I think perhaps I'd like to be known.
