This was really dumb, but it was also pretty fun. Nothing about it was in any way special or remarkable. The writing sucked. It's supposedly YA but it felt really juvenile. It was soooooo cliche, and I don't think there was a single original thing about it. The characters had no personality, and I don't even remember them anymore tbh. It also felt really dumbed down, as if the author thought teens weren't intelligent creatures. The plot was weak and made very little sense, and the ending was super rushed. But I enjoyed myself. It was a hella fun, creepy and mildly terrifying read.

And that's really all I have to say about it. The Haunting of Sunshine Girl was astonishingly mediocre.

This was... Unremarkable. It was really low quality, and super cliche, but it was also a really fun read. RTC. ( )

The Haunting of Sunshine Girl was very promising in the first quarter of the book as a nice little YA creepy thriller. However, it lost something for me at that point when it became more about Sunshine and her history/destiny. I hadn't even minded the typical teen romance as it was very subdued. I thought the boyfriend was a little too convenient and a little too nice, though. Who is going to believe in a haunting and offer to help a complete stranger? I know it would have been hard to make a series from the book if it had just ended in typical ghost story style with no "this is what she's meant to do" plot, but I think I would have enjoyed it more. This was a fun young adult story. It was creepy, but not so scary that my eleven year old daughter (who listened to the audio book with me) was spooked (she likes creepy but not scary - likes Twilight Zone but thought the government employees chasing ET made that movie too scary for her). There are aspects of the story that are a little cliche in the genre. Sunshine is a bit of a Mary Sue. There is hint of a romance, but at least in this book it remains a hint and there is no love triangle. I found the world building interesting although some of the aspects of Sunshine's role and powers have been done before. Overall, it entertained me and I will continue the series with my daughter. The Haunting of Sunshine Girl is based on a YouTube series. The book is around 300 pages and I read it over the course of a weekend. It centers around Sunshine and her recent move to Washington State. The transition is difficult, but made easier by her mother and a new found friend, Nolan. Throughout the book we learn that Sunshine's house is haunted and whatever is in there is after her mother. Sunshine learns a lot about herself and the paranormal and by the end of the book you are left wanting more!

What I really like about this book is the balance between creepy and light. This isn't a scare you straight type of paranormal read. Instead you are eased into the paranormal stuff. There's this weird "oh shit but it's all going to be OK" vibe about the book. The protagonist, Sunshine, is very relatable and so are the supporting characters. McKenzie has done a great job of making this a comfortable read, even if you get scared easily as I do.

*I received an ebook copy of this book from the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. ( )
