"From V.E. Schwab, the critically acclaimed author of Vicious, comes a new universe of daring adventure, thrilling power, and parallel Londons, beginning with A Darker Shade of Magic. Kell is one of the last Travelers--magicians with a rare, coveted ability to travel between parallel universes--as such, he can choose where he lands. There's Grey London, dirty and boring, without any magic, ruled by a mad King George. Then there's Red London, where life and magic are revered, and the Maresh Dynasty presides over a flourishing empire. White London, ruled by whoever has murdered their way to the throne--a place where people fight to control magic, and the magic fights back, draining the city to its very bones. And once upon a time, there was Black London...but no one speaks of that now. Officially, Kell is the Red Traveler, personal ambassador and adopted Prince of Red London, carrying the monthly correspondences between the royals of each London. Unofficially, Kell is a smuggler, servicing people willing to pay for even the smallest glimpses of a world they'll never see--a dangerous hobby, and one that has set him up for accidental treason. Fleeing into Grey London, Kell runs afoul of Delilah Bard, a cut-purse with lofty aspirations, first robs him, then saves him from a dangerous enemy, and then forces him to spirit her to another world for a proper adventure. But perilous magic is afoot, and treachery lurks at every turn. To save all of the worlds, Kell and Lila will first need to stay alive--and that is proving trickier than they hoped. "--… (mais)

I think the fact that I finished this book in one day should tell you a lot about what I thought about this book. I've owned this book for a while now but since I've been in college for the past two years I haven't had access to most of my books so I'm SO happy that during this summer I at least have access to my books again and was able to read this.

Starting this book, I was enjoying it a lot from the very beginning but I thought this was going to be a 4 star read for me but as the plot went on, I found this book more and more engrossing and so hard to put down. If I start really feeling emotional about the characters in the book I'm reading I know it's a pretty good book and that definitely happened here. I even started feeling sad that Lila and Kell had to go on this adventure at all because I was so worried something would happen to them lol.

I really enjoyed the characters of Lila and Kell. I'm the same age as Kell and I think Schwab does a great job writing characters within this age range without making them seem too old or too young. Kell is clearly very experienced because of who he is and that comes across without making him seem older than he is. Lila at times did seem slightly younger than 19 but I think that is because of her sense of feeling trapped as a 19 year old girl in late 19th century London and wanting and needing something different.

I will absolutely be picking up the next book, I just don't know when. I don't own it and I don't know when I'll be able to get a library copy, whether ebook or physical. I do hope it'll be somewhat soon but since I'm trying to read from my physical TBR who knows when I'll read it. I am very excited to see where this story goes in the next book.

(My reading stats for this book)

Note: low key spoilers for the entire book but nothing super specific. If you’re still game:

Well this was a great book. Schwab writes the most marvelous characters. I mean I liked other aspects of this book (don’t even get me started on the plot, it was amazing), but the characters are really the best part. I basically loved all of them, and that includes several scumbags.

Schawb’s magnificent characters actually tie in to the book’s one great flaw. She. Kills. Them. All. Obviously not literally, this isn’t Game of Thrones, but almost every named character died. And countless unnamed characters. (Like literally hundreds) Granted I didn’t count so these figures are probably aren’t particularly accurate, but I mean really, you can’t do this to me my heart can’t handle it.

All joking aside, I’m an adult and I can deal with violence and death, but Schwab went a little overboard with the killing so if you plan on growing attached to any of the characters (besides the main two because this book has two sequels so obviously they survive), well don’t avoid this book necessarily, just think twice before you read it.

(PS If you haven’t read the review that Schwab herself wrote of this book, you are missing out. Go do it now. Here’s a link of it so you have no excuse.)

This is an uniquely intriguing concept filled with magic and thieves and the eternal struggle to maintain balance between good and bad. The thief, Lila, has the courage to steal a stone from the magician, Kell.
But, obviously, it's not just a simple stone. It's part of whole and filled with pure, unadulterated magic, in search for its other half. Combined the stone has the power to bring down all the 3 Londons mentioned- Red, White and Grey- like i said a unique concept. Red London- is filled with magic. White London- Only the rulers have magic- The Dane twins, while the citizens beg, borrow, steal, murder and even go to the extent of scavenging bodies for a sliver of magic. Grey London- totally devoid of magic and home of our thief.
Certain events occur which lead to the twisting of two very divergent paths, but necessary at the same time. Lila and Kell end up saving each other's lives multiple times by the end of the book, i think they will continue doing so further in the series, will have to read to find out. ( )

OH!

That was actually a very nice read!

I think I was scared that, because people seemed to love it so much, it would not live up to the hype. But I can see myself rereading or re-listening (if the narrator is ok) it.

***NOTE***
God I hate the goodreads app. For some reason it selected the hardcover and not the ebook edition and I didn't know how to switch over because apparently that's not that easy to do. So the long way it was. ( )

This is going to sound like damning with faint praise, but the first three paragraphs of this book are great. They’re what drew me in, since they introduced a cool item and explained a worldbuilding device in a casual and interesting way. But in general, Schwab’s exposition doesn’t fare nearly as well— it’s not completely clunky, but it certainly isn’t stylish, and there is a lot of it. It’s the reason that it takes so long for the plot of the book to begin, and I wonder if the book would have fared better if it started with Kell and Lila’s first meeting. I also had a lot of other quibbles with the plot and the logic of the story, as well as the system of magic, and the final part of the book wrapped things up extremely fast. But certainly the premise is cool and interesting, and I can see why the book is popular. It has a very young adult/new adult feel to me.

Unfortunately Crossley’s work on the audiobook is simply not good. The narration is solid enough, but the character voices leave a lot to be desired— Kell sounded twenty or thirty years too old, Lila is constantly whiny and petulant, and the twins are frankly ridiculous.

I don’t think I’ll continue to read the series, but I’m making two predictions about future plot, which I’ll put in spoiler tags just in case: exploration of how the Maresh empire is bad because imperialism, and by extension the king and queen are not really good people, and also how the way they treat Kell is kind of fucked up (that one I’m not actually confident about but it SHOULD be explored), and Lila is an antari (that one I’m 100% on, I mean come on it’s silly they didn’t just say it in the first book). Such is the quandary when it comes to magic, that it is not an issue of strength but of balance. For too little power, and we become weak. Too much, and we become something else entirely. ---- Tieren Serense. head priest of London Sanctuary
