Efter att tidigare ha läst mindre samlingar med texter av Flann O'Brien, egentligen Bryan O'Nolan, såväl sådana han publicerade under namnet Myles na gCopaleen (the da) i kolumnen Cruiskeen Lawn i Irish times som hans romaner, så var tiden inne för en mer substantiell samling: The best of Myles, vilken samlar inte bara de underbart långsökta ordvitsarna från herrar Keats och Chapman, texter om ånglok och den officiöse The Brother, utan även Forskningsbyråns påhitt, Det enkla iriska folkets ordväxlingar med författarens, hans klichékatekeser, där förhör hålls om diverse alltför enkelt framtagna uttryck (»What is a bad thing worse than? Useless.«), märkliga domstolsförhandlingar förs och iriska (talad av författaren när det varken var populärt eller inkomstbringande) texter presenteras.

Flera av dessa är mycket bra, annat känns lite som västgötahistorier eller är på andra sätt för avlägsna för att riktigt roa längre. Somt är dock genialt, som inledningen om ett konstnärsförbund som börjar med att tillhandahålla milt våd mot böcker för att de skall se lästa ut och ägaren som intellektuell privat, men som sedan började hyra ut buktalare för att kunden skulle kunna te sig intellektuell även på offentlig plats … fram till att en oväntad vändning ledde till att det hela föll ut i kaos.

När Myles var som bäst var han fantasifull, kverulant, långsökt, självupptagen. Som så många andra komiker är det inte allt av hans penna beskärt att finna nåd inför kritikern Tiden, men tillräckligt för att samlingar likt denna fortfarande skall vara värda att läsa. ( )

Mr. O'brien made money off this collection of occasionally risque stories, but I found here no descendant of Shaw or Oliver Saint John Gogarty, or even Spike Milligan. Just not very funny. Perhaps the modern Irish aren't. ( )

'Myles' is Myles na gCopaleen' under which ultra-Gaelic name he wrote all this stuff as newpaper articles satirising 'the absurdities and solemnities of Dublin life'. Always amusing, often laugh-out-loud funny. And not restricted to Dublin - half way through we get, for example, a piece explaining why 'there is no excuse for poetry'. Read it! ( )

I'm giving this book 5 stars even though much of it is confusing and/or just not that funny to me. The five stars, however, are richly deserved for the hilarious segments on "Buchhandlung": a proposed business venture in which books bought by the unlettered rich can be made to look well-used, with price points ranging from:

"Popular Handling--Each volume to be well and truly handled, four leaves in each to be dog-eared, and a tram ticket, cloakroom docket, or other comparable article inserted in each as a forgotten book-mark"

all the way up to "Le Traitement Superbe" encompassing, among other things,

"Not less than six volumes to be inscribed with forged messages of affection and gratitude from the author of each work, e.g.,...'From your devoted friend and follower, K. Marx.' 'Dear A. B.,--Your invaluable suggestions and assistance, not to mention your kindness, in entirely re-writing chapter 3, entitles you, surely, to this first copy of "Tess". From your old friend T. Hardy'"

I carried this bit of humor around on xerox for years, foisting it on anyone who would read it. It's well worth the price of the volume. ( )
