I really enjoyed this book. It's a haunted house story but rather than being someone's home, the house that is haunted is a furniture store. It's a twist that I'm not sure I've heard before but which totally makes sense. After someone's home, it is next on the list for where we spend the most time. Work does not have the same comfort of your home but knowing that you still have to go back and experience the ghosts or demons or whatever is still pretty scary.

Orsk Furniture is an Ikea rip-off and all the employees know it. The store still gets lots of business. Inside the Cleveland store, weird things are happening at night. The store manager convinces five employees to spend the night to catch whoever is playing tricks before the corporate executives arrive the next day. That night forever changes all of them.

As I mentioned above, I found the book to be solidly entertaining. It's a new setting for an old idea which I found clever. Some of the normal activities performed in a haunted house are carried out here; I'm thinking mainly of the seance and the final reason for the haunting. Anybody in modern times knows that you don't have a seance in a haunted building unless you want someone to die. The characters were all three dimensional and easy to picture. The final quarter of the book did seem a bit off but I can't exactly say why. Maybe it was the ending. Maybe I was expecting something different. Honestly, I can't quite put my finger on why so I'm hesitant to bring it up much more than that. I'm looking forward to reading more by Hendrix. ( )

I liked this one. There was just the right amount of humor to make me LOL now and then. It was just creepy enough to make me want to hide under the covers after reading on my iPad in the pitch dark woods where I, too, could hear an "army of frogs" outside my window.

Being so familiar with Ikea really helped my reading experience. I mean, I know Ikea like the back of my hand. When the characters are plunged into total darkness, I could totally find my way out of there. Or could I??? 👻😬😱

You can bet the next time I'm in an Ikea I'll be imagining what's behind those fake doors and fake windows. I'll be looking for hairy hands sticking out from under the beds. I'll be looking for a rat in a sink. Graffiti suddenly appearing in the women's restroom. How many times have I been alone in the women's restroom?????

I loved Amy and Ruth Anne. Especially when we got to know what Ruth Anne was really made of. ( )

I appreciated the sly humor in the Örsk setting and product names. The ads between chapters are nicely done with ironic harp music in the audio book. It was lacking in terror and suspense, though. I think maybe I would have found this more frightening if I’d read rather than listened to it, as I felt the main narrator emphasized the humor rather than the horror.

I didn’t appreciate the made-for-a-sequel ending, which failed to tie up loose ends and to give emotional closure to this story in favor of setting up a sequel. ( )

Orsk is an Ikea-type store, and the book is cleverly designed to look like a catalog, complete with chapters leading off with a furniture advertisement. My favorite aspect of the book was the devolvement of the furniture items as the horror unfolded. Strange overnight happenings at the store cause a senior manager (Basil) to request two employees to spend the night there to see what is happening: Amy is a problem employee and Ruth Anne is a model employee. Two other employees also hideaway to make a video for a TV series. A mixture of creepy and corny (corporate policies espoused by Basil) are entertaining at times, but the idea was better than the execution. The rationale for the haunting was plausible, sort of...
