Received from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

As much as I hate to admit it, Sliding Doors was one of those movies that had an impact on me (I can't stand that Gwyneth Paltrow). So when I came across the description of this book, I thought ohhh a book that has a similar kind of feel. I always have those what if kind of moments. What if this instead of that and so on...

I've had a bad run with books set in England but this one turned it all around. I really enjoyed reading Rachel's story and theorizing along with her about what was going on. And even though my suspicions about what was going on proved correct (I guessed fairly early), I still loved getting there along with Rachel. The end made me smile/tear up and the book as a whole is one I will be thinking about for a while. ( )

'All the facts and characters were present but the details and events were twisted into such a bizarre parallel reality. It was my life, but not as I knew it, for here it was all so much better.'

Plot

Rachel Wiltshire's life was perfect. She had a handsome boyfriend, a wonderful group of friends, and she was about to set off for University to study for her dream career. The night of the accident changed everything; Rachel lost her best friend and she was badly scarred.

Five years after the accident, Rachel wakes up from a fall, and discovers that everything is different. The night of the accident was a lucky escape, her best friend is alive and well, and she's working in her dream job. Rachel is thrown into a new world of happiness, love and second chances; but she has memories of a very different life, one filled with guilt and pain.

Can both of Rachel's stories lead to a happy ending?

My thoughts

I saw this book on a First Reads giveaway and thought that the plot sounded interesting and unlike anything I've read before. I was lucky enough to win a copy of this book and I chose to read it in December for a Christmas reading challenge, as the book has snow on the cover. Although most of the book is set in December, and a few pages mention Christmas, this isn't a Christmas book;it's so much more.

I was drawn in from the first page of this book. It starts off on the night of the accident, and it was emotional from the very start, as Rachel loses her best friend. Although Rachel has a boyfriend, you can tell that there's something between her and her best friend Jimmy from the first page.

Rachel's life after losing Jimmy was miserable. She lived in a tiny London flat, working as an Administrator for an Engineering company, a far cry from her dream job as a journalist. Rachel suffers severe headaches, caused by the accident five years earlier, and after a visit to her home town, she suffers a fall. When she wakes up, she finds her life is so much better than she remembers, and when Jimmy appears in her hospital room, she can't believe what she's seeing.

I read several of the pages too fast in this book, as I was so desperate for Rachel to find solace, and I had to go back a few times to re-read certain sections. I found myself really connecting with Rachel; she was in such a terrible situation that I just wanted a happy ending for her, and I had many late nights reading this book until I just couldn't keep my eyes open any more.

The connection between Rachel and Jimmy is beautiful. Although this book is described as a love story, and a large of it is certainly a love story, there was so much more to this story than just romance. It was filled with tragedy, heartbreak, happiness, hope, despair, and everything in between. There were times while I was reading this, as it often happens with stories with an element of mystery, that I had a guess at the outcome of Rachel's predicament. However, all of my guesses were wrong, and the ending was a big shock. This is definitely one of those books that will stay with me for a long time, and although I managed to avoid waterworks, it was a close call, so do keep your tissues nearby.

I have never read a novel by Dani Atkins before. I really did like this novel and will be on the look out for more of her books in the future.

The focus of this novel is about Rachel Wiltshire. Rachel is excited to be going off to college with her boyfriend and her best friend nearby. However, while out celebrating a tragedy erupts that leaves everyone changed. Years later Rachel travels home to attend a friend's wedding and is still dealing with the aftermath of the events from five years ago. Falling and hurting her head while back in her hometown Rachel awakens to things being different for her and her friends.

First off I want to say that I thought that "Then and Always" was written very well. I still gave this novel 3.5 stars though because though the overall plot was interesting I was still able to fore-tell a lot of the plot points and the ending of this novel.

First, I ended up feeling extremely sorry for the character of Rachel. When we are first introduced to her she seemed like a happy in love teenager excited for her future. When Ms. Atkins has the readers catch up with Rachel five years later she is but a pale shadow of her former self. The story-line at that point just seemed to show that Rachel's entire life for five years was just sadness and isolation.

Second, I was not surprised by the direction of the story or ending. I think a lot of things were telegraphed quite early so if a reader is paying attention I don't think they will be shocked by the ending at all.

Finally, speaking of the ending, I was hoping I was wrong about the way the novel would end and felt sad when I realized that I was not.

Please note that I received this novel for free via the Amazon Vine Program. The release date of "Then and Always" is May 20, 2014. ( )
