The Disinherited occurs in a time and place about which my knowledge is limited. I do so love a novel that both entertains and leads to education. Ms. Schrader includes an author's note at the beginning of the story so as to bring her reader up to speed as to the politics of the time so you can understand what is motivating the main character, Sir Gerard.

I enjoyed this novella and to be honest I was sorry when it ended. I wanted more of Sir Gerard's story - I wanted it to continue. We meet him as he received the news that his father is dying and his father is a Cistercian monk. The story gets interesting from there as we learn the history of his family and what motivates Gerard. He ultimately finds his way back to his roots seeking revenge but finding ghosts instead.

I always enjoy a tale that leaves me wanting more and while not perfect (it did wrap up a little too neatly) I would most certainly return for more adventures in this period in history with Ms. Schrader. I think there might be more forthcoming and I'll have to keep my eyes open. When presented with novellas it's a nice break sometimes from longer stories. I finished this in an easy afternoon. ( )
