"In the second volume of the Southern Reach Trilogy, questions are answered, stakes are raised, and mysteries are deepened. In Annihilation, Jeff VanderMeer introduced Area X--a remote and lush terrain mysteriously sequestered from civilization. This was the first volume of a projected trilogy; well in advance of publication, translation rights had already sold around the world and a major movie deal had been struck. Just months later, Authority, the second volume, is here. For thirty years, the only human engagement with Area X has taken the form of a series of expeditions monitored by a secret agency called the Southern Reach. After the disastrous twelfth expedition chronicled in Annihilation, the Southern Reach is in disarray, and John Rodriguez, aka "Control," is the team's newly appointed head. From a series of interrogations, a cache of hidden notes, and hours of profoundly troubling video footage, the secrets of Area X begin to reveal themselves--and what they expose pushes Control to confront disturbing truths about both himself and the agency he's promised to serve. And the consequences will spread much further than that. The Southern Reach trilogy will conclude in fall 2014 with Acceptance"--"In the second volume of the Southern Reach trilogy, Area X's most troubling questions are answered... but the answers are far from reassuring"--… (mais)

    Solaris de Stanisław Lem (Tuirgin)
Tuirgin: Despite the concept of Area X being strikingly similar to the Strugatsky's Roadside Picnic, there are also echos of Stanisław Lem's Solaris—the idea of a type of communication so alien to human modes of communication that it can be harmful to us.

A chance to get out of Area X and explore the organization sending people in / to their deaths over and over again...

But unfortunately, I just couldn't get into it. I missed the limited focus and the mystery of the first book. Even, for what very little we knew about them, the characters.

So it goes.

I don't think I'll finish the series. Annihilation was well worth the read. Leave it at that. ( )

Nope. I thought I would like this more or that it would answer questions from the last book. And is still might, but I just can't read anymore. It's so very boring to me.

I went back and forth on this one, before finally settling on four stars. Not that I thought it was exceptional, but it was better than average, and it's had me thinking. Though, one thing it has had me thinking about is whether I want to continue the series. I think not right away.

The surrealism in this novel sometimes feels forced, too purposeful, and at times I felt like I was reading a story about Swamp-Thing, with a bit of Cthulhu dread by way of Borges. Interesting, but distracting at the same time. Still, it was a short read, and one I looked forward to. I wonder if the others in the series will live up to it. We'll see, just not right now. ( )

This story follows the shadowy organization responsible for the events of the first book in the series, and elaborates on the mysteries and histories of some of the characters from that book. .

Otherworldly psychological horror and general weirdness are less interesting to me when they're combined with beauracratic infighting and family drama. The book's end promises more excitement in the sequel, but I need a break before giving it a shot. ( )

I really want to like this series but it's not really grabbing me. ( )
