Several short stories of hauntings throughout the Adirondacks. When I read these types of books, I often want to know the history of the people and places. Some of the stories delivered, some were very lacking. ( )

Not horrible but nothing that really made me want to visit any of the places mentioned. The author seemed to be having a problem deciding between documenting hauntings and telling a ghost story.

When she is documenting there will be statements that current owners haven't seen the ghost or even owners for the last 200 years haven't noticed anything unusual. When she is story telling there are phrases like "Fact or fiction?" or "...can we every REALLY be sure?" or "YOU decide!"

There might be one place I would visit. The story of the Old Fort House in Fort Edward, NY, tells about a ghost who was seen standing in the cupola that used to be on the roof. The house was built in 1779 with a gambrel roof, was remodeled in 1839 with a peaked roof in the Greek revival style but the historical society persuaded them to restore the original gambrel roof after a chimney fire burned part of the roof and attic in 1943. A cupola was not part of the restoration project and there is no mention of a cupola in the description of the original house written by the architectural historian for the house's nomination to the National Register of Historic Places.

The book is only 69 pages with very large print. Adirondack Ghosts: Stories of Spirits in New York State’s North Country (ISBN-13: 978-0970071811), by Lynda Lee Macken is an 80 page, non-fiction paperback work released by Black Cat Press in August 2000. This work is her first book and one of over a dozen paranormal books that Lynda Lee has written thus far. The book is a fast read and can be enjoyed within a few hours time. It makes for a great book to curl up with to read on a rainy afternoon! Teens and adults will appreciate Lynda’s easy, conversational writing style, and readers will also enjoy the historical information shared about each haunted destination that Macken writes about in Adirondack Ghosts.

For readers that are unfamiliar with Lynda Lee Macken’s work, Lynda maintains a Bachelor’s in Sociology earned at Rutgers University. She is a prolific paranormal author; she is the founder of Black Cat Press, and an individual that maintains a lifelong interest in the paranormal, particularly after her own paranormal experiences at Big Moose Lake in the Adirondacks. Lynda shared her experiences at the lake on the television series, Unexplained Mysteries in the late 1990s, and her experiences are just one of the many ghostly stories documented in Adirondack Ghosts. Macken has been on numerous television and radio programs ever since and she has been a consultant for PBS, Sightings, the Travel Channel, Paranormal Borderline, and Scariest Places on Earth. Macken has written countless articles for national/regional publications and her writings have appeared in FATE Magazine, the Mountain Astrologer, and the Staten Island Advance newspaper among other publications.

Adirondack Ghosts, like all of Lynda’s paranormal books, covers a variety of different haunted establishments including museums, restaurants, resorts, dormitories, and historical sites and homes. Along with the Big Moose Lake murder and haunting, Macken covers paranormal reports occurring at the Garden State Parkway, the Navel Air Warfare Center, and the Surf City Hotel, formerly the Mansion of Health, the Lake Placid Club, Fort Ticonderoga, among others.

Macken’s book offers a fine sample of paranormal events in the Adirondack area. The book leaves the reader wanting to know more details about every case, and for the paranormal investigator, the book can serve as a map for some of the leading haunted hot spots in the area. Adirondack Ghosts is definitely an enjoyable read and one not to be missed by the ghost hunter, the paranormal enthusiast, or the armchair paranormal investigator. All in all, Adirondack Ghosts is a highly enjoyable read. ( )
