The setting was unusual (Iceland) and the conflict was interesting (the main character was nearly killed in an accident during his first visit to Iceland and was suffering from amnesia, but only about his first visit to Iceland). I liked the amnesia aspect, because since this story is told in first person, we have an totally unreliable narrator - he is just as clueless as we are, since he doesn't remember anyone from Iceland and is experiencing the place as though he's never been there before. So, from a mystery/creepiness/edge of your seat story perspective, the amnesia was great. Where it didn't work quite so well, was for the romance part of the story, because you don't know if his love interest was really trustworthy or not, so it was hard to get fully invested in the relationship. It was still a good read though for the atmosphere, mystery, interesting tidbits about Iceland and the characters (MCs and supporting). ( ) I just love the way J.L. Merrow writes her books, so light and yet not superficial, silly or stupid. In Fall Hard Paul Ansell tries to find back his way into life after he and his boyfriend had a serious accident in Iceland falling down a waterfall. While his boyfriend died, Paul lost his memory and is limping (well, just like the cute plumber from her detective stories; why is that??). Back in Iceland Paul re-encounters his former best friend Mag who is trying to support him, the overexcited American student Alex and the handsome Viking Viggo. Does anyone of them know more about his so-called accident? And what his boyfriend really his Prince Charming? This story is a wonderful read for a relaxed weekend. And the best part: it makes you want to go to Iceland, too.
Some memories are better off lost in the mist... Eight months ago, British academic Paul Ansell lost his lover?and all the memories of their time together?in an accident at Iceland's Gullfoss Falls. Returning to the misty island country to resume his study of the bloodthirsty Viking Egil Skallagrimsson is tough as he struggles to pull his life back together. First, there's his colleague, Mags, who treats him like glass, and summer student Alex, who peppers him with discomforting questions. Then there's Icelandic jet-boat driver Viggo, a tattooed, modern-day Viking who won't say much about how they know each other. Leaving Paul to wonder if their volcanic attraction is fuelled by a desire to make a fresh start, or desperation to forget the past. As more fragments of his lost memories fall into place, Paul is unsure if he can trust himself, much less anyone around him. And he begins to suspect his accident was nothing of the kind. Warning: Contains a modern-day Viking whose boat has V8 engines for oars, and a harsh land of hot springs and hotter passions that won't forgive any false steps.
