GR: 1.3 GL: B DRA: 2 Lexile: 70L This book is a bout a girl who is waiting for the bus with an older kid and she keeps asking him if the next vehicle they see coming is the school bus, but it continues to be something different, until finally the bus arrives. This book lacks much substance and would really useful for its multicultural characters. It could also be good for kindergarteners who are just beginning to ride the bus. It is also a very easy read and would be good for kids for that reason. I don't think I would read it to my class, but I would probably keep it in my class library for kids who need an easy read. This story is about a little girl's excitement for school and waiting for the bus. With every excitement there was a question of the bus and her learning different vehicles. It's a good book to read and has nice illustration of the different vehicles. A good book for children that take a bus to school. Just the waiting and the excitement when it finally comes.
Jennifer Janecek (The Lorgnette - Heart of Texas Reviews (Vol. 14, No. 4)) Many things are happening as a young girl and Gus wait for the bus. The repetitive line "Is this the bus for us, Gus?" allows for student participation in reading the line and in guessing if the school bus is coming down the street. The book encourages describing different vehicles (like a taxi and a garbage truck) and what they are for as they pass the children waiting for the bus. As each vehicle passes, another person is added to the line waiting for the bus, lending itself to touch-counting the people on each page. Finally, the "Bus Stop" sign changes frequently throughout the book to "Bus Spot" or "Sub Stop" allowing older children to look for the "mistakes" and point them out when found. Fiction, Highly Recommended. Grades PreK-2. 2001, Boyds Mills, Unpaged, $10.95. Ages 3 to 8.
