From the title I expected something like Nancy Martin's book on decorating every room with untold quantities of quilts, and from the unfortunately chosen cover picture (pink-and-white quilt and hokey flowered straw hat? a decade too late for the 1980s?) I expected insipidity. I was pleasantly surprised to open the book and discover picture after picture of unique, historically important, and graphically inspired quilts. The heart of the book is a study of 50 significant quilts, with photographs (unfortunately sometimes tending towards the photographically exciting image rather than documenting the details a student of textile history might want to see or the overall picture one would get at an exhibition), and text focusing on the history of the particular quilt, the history of its genre and other fascinating details of social history. There's a lot of solid information on quilts and textile history in this book, all presented in a very engaging way. ( ) sem resenhas | adicionar uma resenha
In Living With Quilts, former First Lady of Kentucky Phyllis George celebrates the versatility and beauty of 50 outstanding American quilts. Stunningly photographed in homes throughout the country, these exceptional quilts grace not only walls, but also add warmth and color to dining room tables, wicker rockers, beds of all sizes, sofas, loveseats, even outdoor benches. The book opens with the story of quilt making in America -- a rich tapestry that weaves together the social history, folk art, and women's issues. Living With Quilts then profiles, in text and photos, 50 fabulous American quilts, from the idiosyncratic patterns of Crazy Quilts of the 1870's to innovative contemporary designs. Also included is a look at Phyllis George's own quilt collection, photographed at the exquisite Kentucky mansion Cave Hill. The book concludes with the information on quilt care, craft museums, and quilt dealers.Phyllis George convincingly demonstrates that any room can benefit from the addition of a beautiful quilt. Living With Quilts expands the possibilities for this textile in a way that has never been done before. Não foram encontradas descrições de bibliotecas. |
