While the story is quite enjoyable, what sets this book apart is Henry Underhill's illustrations - water-color drawings painted on glass slides in 1891, intended for use in a "Magic Lantern" machine - the ancestor of the slide-projector. Although he occasionally slips into the sentimental imagery one might expect of a Victorian fairytale, Underhill also delivers a few plates that are quite lovely. The "portrait" of the princess is especially fine. ( )
