Many books have been written about the parables of Jesus and what they mean. This book introduces a different approach to the interpretation of the parables, namely, parables as analogies. John Sider uses an inductive method, drawing on extrabiblical literature in his discussion of how the parables of Scripture can best be understood and interpreted. He also examines from different angles the prevalent theory that each parable of Jesus has only one meaning. All these features ensure that Interpreting the Parables makes a distinctive contribution to the literary analysis of Scripture and our biblical understanding.Part 1 uses examples from the parables and classic parable interpretations to show how analogies work, and it compares these kinds of analogies with nonbiblical texts, from comic strips to Shakespeare. Part 2 gives readers practice in interpreting, to help them see how each parable might work. Part 3 continues the practical aspect in dealing with factors external to the text.
