In this revised bestselling book, Peter Scazzero outlines a roadmap for discipleship with Jesus that is powerfully transformative. He unveils what's wrong with our current definition of "spiritual growth" and offers not only a model of spirituality that actually works, but seven steps to change that will help you experience authentic faith and hunger for God. Peter Scazzero learned the hard way: you can't be spiritually mature while remaining emotionally immature. Even though he was the pastor of a growing church, he did what most people do: - Avoid conflict in the name of Christianity - Ignore his anger, sadness, and fear - Use God to run from God - Live without boundaries Eventually God awakened him to a biblical integration of emotional health and the spiritual practice of slowing down and quieting your life for to experience a firsthand relationship with Jesus. It created nothing short of a spiritual revolution in Scazzero, in his church, and now in thousands of other churches. In this updated edition, Scazzero shares new stories and principles as he outlines his journey and the signs of emotionally unhealthy spirituality. Then he provides seven biblical, reality-tested ways to break through to the revolutionary life Christ meant for you. I read this for a small group at church. It is an excellent book about our inner lives and how dealing with and respecting our emotions can hep us to deepen our relationship with God and with others. ( )

This book was a slow progress, but built up speed quickly. I would think of this as a practical framework to explore and revisit to help one design a more disciplined religious life that builds a closer relationship with God. There is a lot here that would be good to work through and revisit. I particularly liked that Scazzero has mined from various Christian resources that have value to disciples. This isn't a specific game plan, but more of a tool box with advice on how to build the "Rule of Life" that works for you. Scazzero even points out that these rules will change over time based on your own personal journey.
I read the eBook though Overdrive. I will probably buy the physical book, so I can mark up with notes to review later. ( )

This book discusses why many Christians are....not transformed from the heart by their faith. Why many Christians have beliefs/values that come from their family background and culture, rather than their faith. The author argues that this is because Christians do not pay attention to what is underneath the surface -- their beliefs, values and emotions. He suggested some ways to work on a deeper transformation, including identifying hidden beliefs/values espoused from one's family background, acknowledging rather than ignoring one's negative emotions, and turning one's focus to God more often in one's daily/weekly rhythm of life.

I like that the author raises many -- and I mean MANY -- good points. Unfortunately I don't think he is a very articulate or expressive writer. The examples he used to illustrate or explain his points confuses me. I usually need to reflect for some time on my own before understanding the points he was trying to make. (But once you do understand his points, you really appreciate how good the points are :P ) ( )

UPDATE (08/2020):
There are so many reasons I appreciate this book. (I'm changing from 4 to 5 stars.) Scazzero tackles what sadly is a controversial topic (contemplative spirituality) with both grace and conviction, but he does it (I thought) in a way that is gentle and persuasive. This will be my go-to recommended book for almost everyone looking to become more of what God calls them to be. I can only hope to implement his suggestions and practices. If, however, you've been on the contemplative/emotionally healthy journey for sometime, it might feel a little introductory.

FIRST REVIEW (01/2020): You know those books that you read and lament not reading 10 years before. For me, that's this book. Basically since my divorce, where I was forced to recon with the fact I had emotions, I've tried to work at what he describes in this book. Each chapter touches on essential ideas for emotional maturity, which means there are books available on each.

He combines contemplative spirituality with emotional health. It was wonderful, so good in fact I bought a copy before finishing the audiobook. And I plan to read it again before the year is out, and hopefully I'll give a fuller review!
