As an emergency room clinician four years out of veterinary school, Dr. Vint Virga had a life-changing experience: he witnessed the power of simple human contact and compassion to affect the recovery of a dog struggling to survive after being hit by a car. Observing firsthand the remarkably strong connection between humans and animals inspired him to explore the world from the viewpoint of animals and taught him to respect the kinship that connects us.In The Soul of All Living Creatures, Virga draws from his decades in veterinary practice to reveal how we can enrich our own appreciation of life, enhance our character, nurture our relationships, and deepen our grasp of spirituality. Virga discerningly illuminates basic traits shared by both humans and animals and makes animal behavior meaningful, relevant, and easy to understand.… (mais)

This book was a bit too sappy and new agey for we. Like the author I hate using the pronoun it when discussing animals, but unlike the author I feel the terms boys and girls goes too far. Male and female, he and she will suffice. Boys and girls is taking it to far. And if you want to use parables and metaphors to illustrate your points, you don't need to give your readers a step by step explanation of them ; we get it . ( )

The Soul of All Creatures sounded very interesting but... The writing is fine. Many of the stories are interesting. But that is where the appeal for me ends. Between the animal stories is 'stuff' which consisted of fairly shallow commentary on human behaviors and ethics and which apparently was the whole point of the book. Sadly, the whole book left me cold. I struggled to read it and in the end, after 3 attempts, gave up. ( )

A decent read, albeit not exactly what I was expecting. I expected this book to be more philosophical and psychologically based, whereas it was actually filled more with the author's personal experiences and anecdotes. It was interesting, but I wish it had been deeper. ( )

A good review from an animal behaviorist about the importance of being animal like to in our behaviors. I wish he had more anecdotes about his patients and their owners as I found that more interesting than the theory and fables to illustrate some of his points. I think any animal lover would find some thing in this book. ( )

The Soul of All Living Creatures wasn't what I expected, but I did enjoy it. It consisted of Dr. Vint Virga telling stories of some of his cases. Dr. Virga is an animal behavioralist and works with all kinds of animals including zoo animals. He believes that each animal has a soul and that we are connected to them through our souls. Interesting, but not something I would rush to recommend. ( )

Author's Note

The stories I tell in these pages are true. A few of those mentioned here permitted me to use their real names. In all othr narratives, the names and identfying details of those whom I write about —people as well as animals—have been changed in order to protect their privacy and maintain confideentiality. Through the book I refer with intention to individual animals as "he" or "she" instead of "it," which is customary in our culture. The use of "it" when referring to animals draws a distinction between them and us and reinforces viewing them as objects rather than fellow beings. It is clear from all I have written here I believe passionately that living creatures, animals and humans, are unique and individual beings. I leave it to the reader to decide for themselves, after reading these pages, which they feel is more appropriate.
Introduction

Lots of people talk to animals. . . . Not very many listen, though. . . . That's the problem. —Benjamin Hoff, The Tao of Pooh

I had done all that I could for him. Pongo lay on his side in the run, a stack of threadbare blankets beneath him and jugs of warm water swaddled at his sides. For close to an hour I'd been struggling to get him stablilized, since that moment I'd first caught sight of him as he was carried through the treatment room door.
I

Connection

If all the beasts were gone, men would die from a great loneliness of spirit. For whatever happens to the beasts, soon happens to man. All things are connected. —Ted Perry

From birth, even before we've begun to focus on what lies beyond our grasp, a world of strange and wonderful creatures gathers together to watch over us: soft bunny faces on plush baby blankets snuggle with us as we lie in our cribs; stuffed teddy bears with bow ties and peacoats stand at the ready to help ease our fears; animal alphabets, murals with monkeys, and painting of elephants hang on our walls, inspiring us to think and dream and look beyond the world we know.
