" Of the #1 New York Times-bestselling Kinsey Millhone series, NPR said, "Makes me wish there were more than 26 letters." Two dead bodies changed the course of my life that fall. One of them I knew and the other I'd never laid eyes on until I saw him in the morgue. The first was a local PI of suspect reputation. He'd been gunned down near the beach at Santa Teresa. It looked like a robbery gone bad. The other was on the beach six weeks later. He'd been sleeping rough. Probably homeless. No identification. A slip of paper with Millhone's name and number was in his pants pocket. The coroner asked her to come to the morgue to see if she could ID him. Two seemingly unrelated deaths, one a murder, the other apparently of natural causes. But as Kinsey digs deeper into the mystery of the John Doe, some very strange linkages begin to emerge. And before long at least one aspect is solved as Kinsey literally finds the key to his identity. "And just like that," she says, "the lid to Pandora's box flew open. It would take me another day before I understood how many imps had been freed, but for the moment, I was inordinately pleased with myself." In this multilayered tale, the surfaces seem clear, but the underpinnings are full of betrayals, misunderstandings, and outright murderous fraud. And Kinsey, through no fault of her own, is thoroughly compromised. W is for. wanderer. worthless. wronged. W is for wasted"--… (mais)

As usual a great read. Was so involved at one point I missed my bus stop. I love Kinsey-she is such a likeable character. ( )

I hate to give Sue Grafton only a like because I love her character Kinsey, but the interruption of the other story line bothered me. I didn't care about Pete, was he a character in a past book? No matter, I'm onto X - have to finish the alphabet for sure. ( )

Yet again, the story of those who take the alternate path through life is written with sympathy and respect. This was a very enjoyable tale seeing the story of Kinsey Millhone flesh out even further, but in ways which she continues to resist. ( )

What can I say? I've loved the Kinsey Milhone books ever since A is for Alibi. I don't think I've missed a single one, and I still enjoy them from beginning to end. This was the audiobook, and well-narrated in a voice that I could buy into for the character. Looking forward to a few more yet! ( )

As usual in this series, the plot is multi-dimensional, convoluted.

Kinsey Millhone meets Terrence Dace after he's dead. A piece of paper with her name and telephone number is found in his pocket after he is picked up from the beach, where he had been living. The police investigator calls her, hoping she will know who he is and why he had her number. But she doesn't.

So the first thing is to find out who he is, which she does, but it doesn't turn out to be easy. She meets his homeless pals and learns how he has been living, follows up on several leads, finally lands his last name. And through yet another circuitous set of circumstances, involving a raid on another group of homeless persons, Kinsey hits the jackpot, which is his will.

Nothing is ever simple. Kinsey is not working at this time, so takes the time to hunt down relatives and meet with them. Not an altogether happy situation.

Coincidentally, Kinsey is visited by a person from her past, an intimate friend, who has been stiffed by a PI Kinsey knows. There turns out to be a connection between the cases, which of course Kinsey needs to follow up on.

All these complications and Kinsey doesn't even have a client. She is funding her investigation on her own. But she's always been frugal so can do it.

It's a deeply personal investigation, during which we are treated to Millhone's signature style and the details that I love: regular life goes on and we know it by the trips to Rosie's, the trials of living with a noticeable car, the drought conditions, and more. It all adds up to making Kinsey Millhone real, even though Santa Teresa is actually a modified Santa Barbara. I keep thinking I might meet her some time, and she will be close to my age (although her adventures all take place in her younger years). ( )
