This is a wonderful book to read a little bit of every day -- I just finished and can see myself just starting back over at the beginning. ( )

The title is more promising than the book, which is simply a collection on many very short (1-2 pages) profiles of artist and their habits. Obviously, some can be more or less interesting depending on the reader's interests. ( )

Kreatives Arbeiten folgt keinen Regeln, es dominiert die Vielfalt normaler und nicht berechenbarer, überraschender Herangehensweisen. Es ist deshalb mehr als ein Spaß, in diesem Buch zu lesen und unterschiedlichste Tagesabläufe und Routinen kreativer Menschen "aufzulesen".

Ist man selber kreativ, dann wird klar, dass es nur eine Aufgabe geben kann, nämlich seinen ureigenen Arbeits-Stil zu finden. Einige erreichen dies durch strikte Ordnung bzw. Anpassung an vorgegebene Tages-Muster, andere lassen sich nur von einer nahenden Deadline beeindrucken, während Dritte Ihre Arbeiten wild, wechselnd und durcheinander strukturieren.

Karl Lagerfeld zu Beginn dieses Buches ist ein sich streng an 7 Stunden Schlaf ausrichtender, immer einem ähnlichen bis gleichen Nacht- und Tagesablauf folgender Künstler. Er nimmt den ganzen Tag Anlauf, um abends dann ruhig und konzentriert wesentliche Aufgaben schnell zu erledigen. Wollte man ihm in der Nähe des Louvre in Paris begegnen, dann könnte man dies zum Beispiel in seiner Lieblingsbuchhandlung tun, die er wohl täglich aufsucht (Galignani) Seine wichtigste kreative Tätigkeit ist das Tagträumen und ich hoffe, dass er dies auch bei seiner täglichen Prozedur, dem Haarweißfärben um 11 Uhr bestens umsetzt.

Sloterdijck bringt seine Gedanken mittags mit längeren Fahrradfahrten in Schwung, um so wieder neue Einfälle und Ideen zu bekommen. Wir erfahren, wo er im Internet liest, um den Kopf zu schütteln (die Achse des Guten) oder etwas Sympathisches zu lesen (Telepolis). Das mit Abstand Beste im Netz findet er täglich in Arts & Letters Daily, einem anglofonen Super-Perlentaucher. „Damit entgeht mir kein intelligenter Satz, der irgendwo in der Welt auf Englisch geschrieben wird.“ Dem würde ich zustimmen, obwohl ich feststellen würde, dass er zwischen Kopfschütteln und Sympathie besser jene skeptischen Nachdenkgedanken erforschen sollte, die heute notwendig sind. Möglicherweise liest er aber auch zu viel in Arts&Letters Daily, denn sein letztes Buch und auch andere habe ich bislang nach drei oder vier Seiten wieder weggelegt, weil mir der Komplexitätsgrad im umgekehrten Verhältnis steht zum Erkenntnisgewinn.

In Sills-Maria muss jeder gewesen sein, der sich auf die Spuren von Nietzsche machen möchte. Auf Wanderungen im nahen Gebirge wird nachspürbar, welche äußeren Wirkkräfte Nietzsche damals umgaben und wie er mit Stift und Notizheft unterwegs Notizen eingetragen hat, um sich täglich im Restaurant Alpenrose – Steak und Unmengen von Früchten – wieder zu stärken. Dieses Restaurant kann jeder heute noch besuchen ebenso wie das Haus, in dem Nietzsche wohnte, inzwischen ein Museum.

Gerhard Polt schreibt ausschließlich mit der Hand an seinem Schreibtisch unterm Dachfenster, durch das er bisweilen hilfe – und trostsuchend in den Wolkenhimmel blicken kann. Für Polt ist das Nichtstun bei der Erarbeitung von Drehbüchern ein notwendiges „Hermutschildkröteln“, ein schönes Wort, das notwendigerweise von Gerhard Polt kommen muss. Zu seiner Katze unterhält er ein symbiotischs Meditations- und Motivationsverhältnis.

Jeder, der selbstständig arbeitet und dabei kreativ ist, verliert sich in der Zeit. Cornelia Funke bringt dies treffend zum Ausdruck. Als sie noch eine kleine Illustratorin war, arbeitete sie 13 oder 14 Stunden am Tag, um zu überleben. Und heute? Noch nie hat sie nach eigener Auskunft weniger gearbeitet! "Beim Schreiben hört sie gerne Musik von Johann Sebastian Bach, Henry Purcell, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart oder Lautenmusik von Silvius Leopold Weiss, aber nur sehr leise im Hintergrund: Wenn ich schreibe flüsterte ich dabei. Daran merke ich, ob die Sprache stimmt. Im Mittelalter galt es als ketzerisch, ohne Ton zu lesen. Wer dabei nicht flüsterte, musste vom Teufel sein.“

Das Buch enthält einige Schwarzweißbilder, die einzige Doppelseite 56-57 zeigt Cornelia Funke an Ihrem Schreibtisch bei der Arbeit, umrahmt von einem lichtdurchfluteten Fenster links und einem riesigen Bücherregal auf der Rückseite. Der Schreibtisch ist so groß und überquellend, wie man sich das bei ihr vorstellen würde: Dieses Porträt zeigt eindrücklich, dass sie Spaß bei der Arbeit hat und die Zeit vergisst.

Ein wunderschönes Buch, A6 im Format, mit Lesezeichen, ein Gewinn für jeden Kreativen, ein passendes Geschenk, über das sich jeder Künstler freuen wird. ( )

Interesting and enjoyable to read about and compare so many artists’ daily rituals. I found this book to be both inspiring and eccentric. ( )

Probably the kind of book you should keep next to your bed, or, if you're that kind of person (and I am), in the bathroom, for occasional reading. A wonderful cross section of artists included here, from writers to inventors, architects to painters, and philosophers to composers. While there was a certain number of artists for whom Benzedrine popping helped get the work done, there we just as many who required nothing more than the same breakfast daily (eggs seem to be a favorite). I was struck by for how many walks (more than once daily) and naps seemed to provide the day's main structure.

So. I have the main structure down. Now to fill in the gaps between walks and naps more profitably! ( )
