This book is the 'updated' versions of both Chain Letter and Chain Letter 2: The Ancient Evil. The updates were out of place at times. Don't introduce cell phones just to have their battery die. The dialog was updated but I felt it was more readable than Pike usually is because of it. The first is a standard teen slasher. The second is a standard teen slasher with an interesting twist. If you read Pike for the batshit crazy that finds it's way into his books you have to wait until almost the end of the second book for it to appear. Chain letter by Christopher Pike is easily one of the most interesting books I have ever read. This story is about a group of friends who receive a letter from an anonymous caretaker who knows a deep secret that will ruin their lives if told. The anonymous caretaker ends up controlling their lives by making them do unthinkable missions in order to not have their secret revealed. This book is great for anyone who likes plot twists and suspense. I have enjoyed reading this book because It was a pretty easy read and I'm not much of a reader. sem resenhas | adicionar uma resenha

I read the 'updated' version and I really thought that I would've hated it but I weirdly didn't. Sure there are inconsistencies like, someone is recording with a cell phone but a few chapters later a tape recorder is mentioned. Speaking of cell phones- it's quite ridiculous to mention them and then have them have no signal or be dead. Just, I don't know, not update it to begin with? Another 'update' was mentioning Brad Pitt and Princess Kate. Wow, so now THIS edition is going to be dated in 20 years.
Anyway, I really did enjoy the story. It reminded me quite a lot of I Know What You Did Last Summer.
The Ancient Evil - Chain Letter 2
I read the 'updated' version and I have to say that, other than a few typos, this one felt like it had less updating in terms of mentioning of cell phones and what not than the first book. The dialog was definitely overhauled in both books because it just didn't feel like a Christopher Pike book. I enjoyed it anyway and I do have one more Pike trilogy that is 'updated' that I plan to read.
The story expanded on the first and frequent mention was made back to the first book. I liked where it went. I would have liked the batshit crazy to have started sooner but it felt fresh as far as YA slasher books from the 1980's go. The ending was a bit sappy, but that's Pike for you.
